Discussion Questions

Real or Mythical, do you know of somesymbolic animals in Vietnamese culture?

• Hint: there are 4 primary animals

The Dragon

In Vietnam, dragons symbolize power.

Images of dragons appear in architectural decorations in Royal Palaces, temples, pagodas and tombs.

The Unicorn

US version of a unicornthe Vietnamese Unicorn represents Prestige (respect), Peace & Good Luck.

The unicorn has a strange appearance, half dragon-half mammal; sometimes it has only one horn. It’s thought to be a strong andloyal animal.

The Tortoise

The tortoise is a symbol of Longevity (long life) andstrength.

There’s a legend about a tortoise god who helped King An Duong Vuong build Co Loa citadel.

The famous Hoan Kiem Lake or “Lake of the Restored Sword” in the center of Hanoi is associated with a myth about King Le Loi, who returned the sword to the tortoise god after defeating his enemies.

The Phoenix

In Vietnam, the phoenix represent lovers’ happiness, good luck, status and fame.

*In other cultures, it represents new life. The myth states that a phoenix died in a fire, but rose from the ashes to live again.

If you had the opportunity to go hunting, would you go? What animal would you hunt?

Breaking NewsLet’s discuss…

Dentist, Walter Palmer.

Cecil, the Lion

The story… in a nutshell• US dentist, Walter Palmer, went to Zimbabwe (Africa) to hunt big game.

• To hunt, you must pay private guides who know area and are legally allowed to hunt (with a license).

• Walter paid two guides $50-55k USD. to help him kill a lion

• Tragically, the lion they killed was a protected lion in a National Park.

• Cecil was a 13-yr old lion and one of the national parks greatest touristattractions.

He was unique because of his special black mane.

Cecil was also being researched by the university of Oxford, so he wore aGPS collar.

Palmer shot Cecil with a crossbow; the team tracked Cecil and foundhim 40 hours later. They then killed him with a gun. The story spread quickly in the news andpeople are outraged.

The two guides who helped Palmer havebeen arrested for poaching because theydidn’t have the proper permits.

Walter claims that he didn’t know that theguides were illegally hunting.

Opinion:

• If you could decide what should happen to Walter, what would you do? Is he innocent? Should he pay a fine? Jail?
