GRANTA SOLUTION
Engineering Design, Analysis,
and Simulation
Ensure the validity and quality of critical materials property data used in your
product design and analysis
Deploy corporate materials knowledge and reference data throughout your
CAD and FEA/CAE communities, in a controlled and secure manner
Enable designers and analysts to get materials property data directly within
their engineering application, without interrupting their workfl ow
Embed product analytics and materials selection into your preferred CAD,
CAE, or other PLM system
Why is materials support for CAD, CAE, and PLM important?
For most engineering designers or analysts, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer
Aided Engineering (CAE), or other Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software are
essential tools. Substantial investments of money and time are made in implementing
and using these systems. Often, this software relies on materials data—for example,
density or price for CAD analyses, or models describing mechanical properties for use
in simulation. It can be diffi cult to fi nd the right data: it is rarely available from a single,
convenient source. So CAD and CAE users often waste time looking for data or, worse
still, use data that may be incorrect, inconsistent, or out-of-date.
Similarly, materials engineering teams invest effort and resources in generating
accurate, approved materials data. But they often lack an effective, effi cient means to
deploy this data to the design teams that need it.
And there is another reason for wishing to integrate materials data with design. Doing
so can enable valuable decision support tools—for example, to identify which design
route would minimize environmental impact or to select materials to optimize cost.

Granta’s solution
A single source for your materials data
GRANTA MI™ enables engineering enterprises to capture all of their proprietary materials
data in a single, controlled, secure materials information resource. Integrated tools allow
materials experts to analyze this data and publish approved information for use in design.
You can also access Granta’s comprehensive library of materials property and process
data, including: aerospace alloy and composite data (e.g., MMPDS alloys, CMH-17
composites); metals data (ASME BPV code, StahlDat steels); plastics data (CAMPUS);
medical materials databases; and Granta’s own MaterialUniverse, which offers technical,
environmental, and economic data in support of materials selection and substitution.
Export to CAD, CAE, and PLM
The data in your corporate GRANTA MI database can be accessed through an intuitive
web-browser interface and exported in the right formats for software like Abaqus®,
ANSYS®, CATIA®, Creo Elements/Pro®, Nastran®, Patran®, and Pro/ENGINEER®.
Full integration with CAD, CAE, and PLM
Now it’s even easier to access materials reference data and approved corporate materials
information. GRANTA MI:Materials Gateway lets you browse, search, and use data in a
GRANTA MI database directly within CAD, CAE, PLM or other software. MI:Materials
Gateway is available for software including Abaqus/CAE®, Pro/ENGINEER®, NX™,
ANSYS® Workbench™, and Autodesk® Inventor®. The result is effi cient, error-free
integration of materials data into the workfl ow of designers and analysts.
Enabling product analysis and materials selection
As well as providing vital data to support the existing analysis capabilities of CAD, CAE,
and PLM, MI:Materials Gateway enables a new generation of materials-related software
applications within these systems. For example, Eco Materials Adviser is a tool embedded
within the Autodesk Inventor software that combines Granta materials data with data
from an Inventor model to provide a quick estimate of the eco impact of a design.
