Take turns reading aloud the following pairs of sentences. Take note the pronunciation of the

underlined words.

● All proceeds of the concert go to the Charity for Children Foundation.

● Were you able to record the lecture of Dr. Santos?

● According to the class record, five pupils had perfect attendance.

Did you notice words spelled similarly but

pronounced differently? Are their meanings the

same?

Some words-mostly two-syllable words-are

spelled similarly but pronounced differently. The

meanings of such words vary, too, depending on the

stress.

When these words are stressed at the first

syllable, they are nouns; when they are stressed at the second syllable, they

are verbs.

Read the following aloud. Then write meaningful sentences using each word.

The first one has been done for you.
