Creative partnerships:
Promoting physical
activity by stealth
The British Heart Foundation National Centre for Physical
Activity and Health (BHFNC) recently held their 2014
conference to look at the concept of stealth interventions
and explored how the latest research, theory and practice
can be applied to the promotion of physical activity.
Stealth interventions aim to piggyback on existing
movements or causes where people are doing physical
activity, but their primary reason for doing physical activity
is something different. For example raising money for a
charity through sponsored running or swimming events.
From the individuals’ perspectives and those of the
movement or cause, the potential benefits to health are
considered a beneficial side effect.

breakout session slides from this page

“Being Active” guide
supports disabled people
to enjoy a more active
lifestyle
A new guide released ahead of International Day for Disabled People supports more
disabled people to enjoy an active lifestyle. “Being Active”, unveiled today by the English
Federation of Disability Sport in partnership with Disability Rights UK, talks directly to
disabled people. It gives inactive disabled people access to relevant information, so they
have control over where, what and how they can start being active.
Research shows that most disabled people are not as active as they would like to be.
According to Sport England’s Active People Survey four out of five disabled people take
little or no exercise. But that is not because disabled people do not want to be active. In
the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) Lifestyle Report released in 2013, it
found that seven in ten disabled people want to increase their physical activity.
The national charity is recognising Wednesday 3 December is International Day of
Disabled People with the release of the “Being Active” publication. It aims to improve the
number of disabled people choosing to lead an active lifestyle and provides enough
guidance on where to start.
“The publication of the ‘Being Active’ guide will hopefully give disabled people interested
in being more active information and advice to help get them started.”
The Being Active guide is available in accessible PDF and EasyRead formats through the
