Empire RanchAnnual Roundup

Horses, History & Trees that Can Kill You

Nov. 1, 2014By Ryn Gargulinski

Empire Ranch is a historical homestead about 50 miles southeast of Tucson, AZ. A handful of families have owned the ranch, which was eventually passed on to the Bureau of Land

Management.

Famous TV shows and movies (Night of the Lepus!) have been filmed at the ranch. The place also holds an annual roundup where a couple thousand folks usually show up to hang out, dance to cowboy tunes

and eat barbecue stuff you have to buy with a food ticket. Here’s a glimpse of the action at the annual 2014 roundup.

Trees (and other things) that Can Kill You

The area’s huge cottonwood trees are self-

pruning, the sign explained, dropping their thousand-pound branches willy-nilly whenever they

feel the need.

Area rattlesnakes, like this one spotted on the Heritage Trail, are another death hazard.

But what fun is the Old West without a little risky adventure?

How can Kettle Korn kill you? Try being distracted by one of these dang trucks when you’re riding your motorcycle and suddenly hit a red light. Ouch.
