“STEM education,” as used in this report, includes the subjects of mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics, which have traditionally formed the core requirements of many state curricula at the K-12 level. In addition, the report includes other critical subjects, such as computer science, engineering, environmental science and geology, with whose fundamental concepts K-12 students should be familiar.

“Although the term ‘STEM education’ is used in national education policy, it is not implemented in a way that reflects the interdependence of the four STEM subjects.”

-NAE/NRC Committee on K-12 Engineering Education (2009)

Tuesday, February 28, 12

“By ‘science,’ Project 2061 means basic and applied natural and social science, basic and applied mathematics, and engineering and technology, and their interconnections—which is to say the scientific enterprise as a whole. The basic point is that the ideas and practice of science, mathematics, and technology are so closely intertwined that we do not see how education in any one of them can be undertaken well in isolation from the others.”

What does college and career readiness

mean?

Tuesday, February 28, 12

Both students bound for college and for careers need core academic skills, but students who are planning to start their careers also need employability and technical skills."All three of them must be in place and must be achieved by an individual in order to be considered career ready,” said Jan Bray, the association's executive director."Whether you’re going to be a doctor, a lawyer, a welder, a nurse, a cosmetologist, you name it, you’re going to need a core of academics that you can apply,” Bray said.Education Experts Define Career ReadinessBy Tanya RoscorlaON APRIL 14, 2010 COLLEGE AND CAREERhttp://www.convergemag.com/workforce/Education-Experts-Define-Career-Readiness.html

Tuesday, February 28, 12

...to truly be career-ready, students also need to be able to apply academics in context, and some academic skills need more attention and development. For example, employers often cite deficiencies in English and written communications, such as memos, letters and complex technical reports. This supports the idea that most of the written material students will encounter in their careers is informational in nature, such as technical manuals and research articles, and they must be equipped academically to analyze and use these materials. Too often, these skills are not emphasized in traditional academic classrooms. Workplace deficiencies in math are also commonly noted, with more attention needed on areas such as data analysis and statistics, reasoning, and solving mathematical problems.

The Manufacturing Experimentation and Outreach (MENTOR) engages high school-age students in a series of collaborative design and distributed manufacturing experiments. The goal is to encourage students across clusters of schools to collaborate via social networking media to jointly design and build systems of moderate complexity, such as mobile robots, go carts, etc., in response to prize challenges.

Today, Finland’s progressive strategy includes: multi-disciplinary and multi-industry collaboration to integrate

nano science-, bio science-, information science- and cognitive science-based research and development (Tieke,

2005, p.9); converging design, art and science in the contexts of education and human development

(Tahkokallio and Koivusilta, 2004, p.1); national R&D policy and urban-rural development establishing connected

regional centers of innovation; partnering with global high tech markets and industries (Embassy of Switzerland, Beijing, 2005, p.12); and leading the world in “Public-

Private Partnership” (with efforts dating back to the year of their independence, 1917) (Tieke, 2005, p.12-15).

TEAMS is about engaging the whole of all disciplines to ask:

• What is the human condition and what can we do about it?

• What is the role of “design, creativity and critical thinking” in executing new designs for learning?

• How can we work together to put knowledge into action -- to create discourse across the disciplines -- and to link & integrate curricula with the world?

• How can we shift learning so that students take more responsibility for learning and teachers can take back the sandbox of learning?

TEAMS is about engaging the whole while preserving and leveraging what is important and unique in the parts. The goal is holistic thinking, learning, and practice. The desired result is a stronger educational community of practice and better educational, social, and economic outcomes for students and civil society.

Bonus - Cinquain (Syllables 2, 4, 6, 8, 2) The word Cinquain is derived from the French word for five. An American poet named Adelaide Crapsey invented the Cinquain. She wrote a lot of poems with this format in the last years of her life. She died early, at the age of thirty-six. The Cinquain is a short, 5-line poetry form, with a distinct pattern (2, 4, 6, 8, 2)
