I. Introduction (1)15 years of development

A deep change and a big development of Spanish Academic Libraries in the last 15 years:

– New Universities– New Library Buildings– More investment in High Education– More professional organization– Full automation management and services– High use of international standards

Introduction (2)REBIUN: a national association

National Association: REBIUN (Red Española de Bibliotecas Universitarias = Spanish University Libraries Network): www.uma.es/rebiunREBIUN is an Association whose purposes are to encourage the library cooperation between the Spanish Universities and to be a forum for interchanging information and writing proposals that represents all Spanish Academic Libraries.

Other members: Research libraries (CSIC=National Scientific Research Council) and National Library.

Introduction (3)REBIUN. Brief history

Introduction (3)REBIUN. Brief history

REBIUN was created at the end of the 80’s by 9 libraries and now it is integrated by 50 libraries.

In 1997 REBIUN was integrated into CRUE: (Conferencia de Rectores de Universidades Españolas = Spanish University Presidents Conference), as a Sectorial Committee. REBIUN send to CRUE the proposals and CRUE gives legal and administrative support.

Introduction (4)Main activities of REBIUN

• To write Recommendations for Academic and Research Libraries (1997)

• Union catalog in MARC format: first on CD-ROM and REBIUN on line since July 2.000 (Z39.50 server)

• Annual Statistics: from 1.994 until 2.000 Statistics yearbook on print and web version.

• Web Site of REBIUN (http://www.uma.es/Rebiun): Directories, Bulletins, working papers, statistics, web sites of interest, etc.

• Interlibrary loan rules

Introduction (5)Other activities of REBIUN

• Working groups: Electronic Resources, Interlibrary Loan, Union Catalog maintenance, Evaluation and quality management, Collection management, Statistics, etc.

• New Projects– CAR (Cooperación en Adquisición de Revistas

= Journal Adquisitions Cooperation): national cooperation in serial adquisitions (electronic resources)

– Strategic Plan for new developments in order to planify goals for the next future.

Introduction (6)Spanish Library Consortia

• Academic Libraries in the transition to hybrid libraries (print and electronic collections, “in situ” and remote services)

• Regional University Libraries Consortia:- Catalonia: CBUC (www.cbuc.es)- Madrid: MADROÑO- Andalucía- Galicia

• Other Virtual Consortia for buying electronic information (ISI databases...)

Introduction (7)Some dates of Spanish Academic Libraries (2.000 year statistics)

- 1.500.000 students

- 113.000 students of postgraduated cicle

- 138.000 proffessors

- 45.500 Administrative staff (5.000 libraries staff, 2.100 of them librarians of different categories: A, B or C)

- 142.500 seats in the libraries

- Near 29.000.000 books and 150.000 journals

- 3.500 databases on network

- 30.000 e-journals

II. Academic Libraries Automation (1)II. Academic Libraries Automation (1)

• High level of automation

• Last years: Library systems in Spain:– UNICORN– INNOPAC– VTLS (Catalonia)– ABSYS (Spanish software)

III.Types of electronic resources (1)III.Types of electronic resources (1)

By content:– Databases (bibliographic references or full text)

– Basic reference (dictionaries, encyclopedies, etc.)

– Table of contents of journals, from “aggregators” or local databases (CompluDoc, Base de dades de sumaris del CBUC, etc.)

– E-journals (last 3 years)

– E-books (less development)

– Digital libraries

III. Types of electronic resources (2)III. Types of electronic resources (2)

By formats or type of access:

- CD-ROM (local or network)

- Remote access (licencies for accessing through Internet).

- Gateways to Internet sites of academic resources

IV. Databases (1)IV. Databases (1)

Local Servers: ERL (SilverPlatter),

SilverLinker (Unix o Linux plataform)CD-ROM network (accessing from Internet through softwares as winframe or metaframe)

Internet Licenses- Publishers- Aggregators

Recognition of Institution’s IP adresses or authentication systems

IV. Databases (2)CD-ROM’s Network

IV. Databases (2)CD-ROM’s Network

• Encyclopedies and dictionaries• Bibliographic catalogs • Specialized databases from different publishers

and sotfwares (more difficult for the user)• Each database has a different searching software

and need many maintenance tasks • The last trend is to replace this system by Internet

access if this is possible. (cost)

IV. Databases (3)Internet databasesIV. Databases (3)Internet databases

• More advantages:– Maintenance– Updating– User services (profiles, favourites, crossref ...)

• Some disadvantages:– More expensive (Web of Science, Scifinder...)– License’s conditions: revision of the licenses

(statistics, fair use, legal aspects, ...)

IV. Databases (4)Table of contents of Journals

IV. Databases (4)Table of contents of Journals

• Very popular service in Spanish Academic Libraries. The Journal Agencies (EBSCO, SWETS) don’t offer the Spanish journals table of contents. The Academic Libraries and the CSIC have to create those databases.

• Some Spanish databases: COMPLUDOC (Universidad Complutense de Madrid), CBUC (Catalonian Consortium) and CSIC databases.

V. E-Journals (1)V. E-Journals (1)• First Spanish experience: e-journals in a local

server: DECOMATE Project (European Project of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona)

• Last three years: remote access to electronic versions (mantaining print versions):– To Publisher’s servers– To aggregators servers (EBSCO On line or

SWETSNet)

• E-journals packages (Academic Ideal, Emerald, Science Direct of Elsevier, IEEE, etc.)

• Full text Databases from “aggregators” (Bell & Howell: ABI, Academic Search, etc.)

IV. E-journals (2)Some problemsIV. E-journals (2)Some problems

• More cost of the scientific journals each year and an extra cost for the electronic version.

• Need of a national agency to negociate a cooperative adquisition of the basic scientific information resources (examples: NESLI in the U.K., other National Consortia). This is a new goal for REBIUN.

IV. E-Journals (3)Technical aspectsIV. E-Journals (3)Technical aspects

• Technical requirements

• Formats• Access management

and authentication• Maintenance • Archive

• Integration in the Library System and databases (local o remote)

V. E-journals (4)Legals aspects

V. E-journals (4)Legals aspects

• Negociation of access licenses for one institution or for a Consortium (real or virtual)

• Guarantee of future accessibility (archive)• Statistics of use• License’s recommendations and models:

Statement of current perspectives and preferred practices

for the selection and purchase of electronic information (ICOLC. Spanish versión http://www.uma.es/rebiun)

VI. Digital Libraries (1)VI. Digital Libraries (1)

• Digitalization of their own collections (archive documents, manuscripts, ancient books, etc.): for preservation and diffusion.

• Digitalization of handbooks or some chapters for the Campus Intranet (with permission of the author or publisher) (some experiences as the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya)

• Other materials: working papers, course papers (Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya), etc.

• Dissertations (University Publishers): CD-ROM, Online.

VI. Digital Libraries (2)Academic Internet resources

VI. Digital Libraries (2)Academic Internet resources

• Gateways for Academic Internet Resources: integration of all types of resources:– Electronic reference materials: directories,

dictionaries, encyclopedies, institutions, etc.– Library catalogs and databases– E-journals and indexes (Table of contents)– E-books– Other web resources of academic interest

VII. Conclusions (1)VII. Conclusions (1)

• Internet has transformed the way through people access to the information. There is a risk that Libraries and librarians become the last resource. Information specialists and librarians must anticipate those changes and adapt their role for the future.

• The Academic Library without barriers and personalized electronic services.

• The Academic Libraries as a basic support for distance learning.

• Librarians and Computer Staff team working very closed to Proffessors and Researchers.

VII. Conclusions (2) Recommended strategies

• To Redesing the searching systems.• To integrate print and electronic resources.• To offer personalized services and distance

information support.• To mantain a closed collaboration with proffessors

and researchers. • To innovate, to create and to adapt as fast as

possible to the changes• Cooperation
