Elastopôle has begun to work on the emergence of health projects (link to "Therapeutics of tomorrow and health"), and also examines possible contributions of rubber to the design sector (design, cultural and creative industries: games, children's toys, etc.)

KEY ISSUES FROM TECHNICAL DAY AXE OF MARCH 9th 2016• Tires : the best recycled rubber products (with recognized partners such as ALIAPUR)• Industrial rubber : recycling of these products is currently very little processed. Only 8% of the industrial rubber
present in a car is recovered, but with added value (little energy recovery) • Recycling rubber through the use of bacteria : this process is difficult to envisage for the treatment of large
volumes of rubber because of the reaction kinetics of bacteria
1/Rubber (excluding pneumatic) Diversity of grades and volumes complex to set up a recovery chain
Need for manufacturers to have input data on: Used products
Existing deposits: which ones? What access? What volumes? For example, for large household appliances, a valorization way exists and it would be necessary to be able to access them to recover seals, etc. Another example, for the automotive industry : how to extract and then valorize elements such as seals, windscreen wipers, etc.?
Production waste: • What normative limits? • What applications?
It seems necessary to identify economic interests: a market study must be carried out before launching a project, in order to detect the actors and products to work on

2/Valorization of rubber waste in the building industry
Since acoustic insulation is a major issue in the building industry, many applications for the valorization of elastomers can be developed with this market. In addition, new standards related to indoor air quality will be introduced in the construction industry. Bringing new products to meet this standard would be an interesting approach. The negative point on this market is the difficulty to find a company interested and willing to invest on R&D projects related to this.
3/Recycling of polyurethanes and TPE
There is a problem of volume in order to be able to launch projects, as well as diversity of ranks.There is a need for qualification of the waste (eg the presence of halogen), thereby causing extremely high costs.A valorization in cement plants could be interesting, but due to volumes, it is now more expensive to send them to the cement plant than to throw them away.
What other valuations than the energy solution?
For PU materials, vapo‐thermolysis could be a way to obtain second generation raw materials (more interesting with PU whose cost of the raw material is already high). Hydrolysis can also work and allow a 100% recovery.
