El pretérito

• The preterite is one Spanish equivalent of the past tense in English. (Up to now, we have been speaking only in the present tense.)

• The preterite expresses what someone did do. • It is often compared to the “ed” form of the verb in English.• It is used to express an action or event that began and

ended at a specific time in the past.• Similarly to the present tense, the preterite is conjugated by

dropping the ar, er, or ir from a verb and adding the preterite endings.

• There are also some verbs where the “i” in the preterite ending changes to y in the él/ella/usted and ellos/ellas/ustedes forms. This change is for spelling and pronunciation purposes.
