ASETS Agreement Extended for an Additional Year
While New Terms Negotiated
ly the North Shore region.
On December 22, ASETS
Sagamok was informed that the
current agreement will continue
with an additional one year ex-
tension agreement from April
2017 to March 2018, while dis-
cussions continue.
The Aboriginal Skills and Employ-
ment Training Strategy,
Sagamok’s primary source of
funding for employment and
training related programs and ser-
vices, ended March 31, 2015.
Since that time, two 1-year exten-
sions to the agreement have pro-
vided continued funds up to
March 2017.
ASETS Agreement Holders have
been in discussions with Employ-
ment and Social Development
Canada (ESDC) over the past few
years to discuss changes to future
agreements. Under the previous
Conservative government, a ma-
jor focus of the agreement was on
employment results, partnership
development, and reporting ac-
countability.
These priority areas have created
some challenges for First Nations
who live in rural or remote areas,
with limited access to industry
and employers. It has also con-
tributed to, what is considered by
many, to be an unnecessary ad-
ministrative and reporting bur-
den.
The recent switch from Conserva-
tive to Liberal government in Can-
ada has meant that the Liberals
are now working to identify the
needs and key challenges for fu-
ture agreements for Aboriginal
employment and training funding.
Sagamok ASETS Coordinator,
along with the North Shore Tribal
Council ASETS Unit Manager,
have attended various meetings
and consultation discussions to
provide input and inform the ne-
gotiations about challenges to
current agreement structure, and
offer suggestions for improving
future agreement terms that will
better meet the unique needs of
north-central Ontario First Na-
tions communities, and specifical-
