GCSE 2009 – Introduction to delivery and assessment

controlled speaking tasks and their requirements.

Assessment tasks and their requirements:TWO different tasks from: Picture based discussion

Presentation and follow up discussion

Open interaction

Picture based discussion:STUDENTS: Choose a picture or a photograph that

relates to something that interests them, aligned to one of the themes.

Have ownership of the assessment via this choice.

May give a presentation of up to one minute.

Picture based discussion: holidays. Find a picture of a recent holiday.

You should be prepared to answer a range of questions about this holiday and holidays in general.

These questions may include reference to ...

These questions may include reference to:•Where you spent your last holiday and what you did.•What you normally do in the holidays and why.•How you travel when you go on holiday.•What sort of accommodation you stay in on holiday.•Who you go on holiday with.•Your holiday plans for next year.

Presentation and follow up discussion.

STUDENTS: Choose an area or a topic that relates to

something that interests them.

Give a short presentation: 2 – 3 minutes maximum, but one minute is sufficient.

Respond to a series of linked, follow on questions.

Open interaction.STUDENTS: undertake an interaction in response to

a stimulus.

Content. Focused content – both tasks can relate

to one specific theme. Two tasks could be linked to two

different themes. Opportunities for stretch and challenge. Same theme(s) and contexts for

speaking and writing – but no direct overlap of content or purpose.

Delivery. Facility to conduct speaking

assessments when appropriate. Submit candidate work in either Winter

or Summer. 1st submission opportunity: Summer

2010 1st certification: short course - Summer

2010 full course –

Summer 2011 Editable course planner and schemes or

work.

Re-sitting of units. All GCSE 09 MFL are unitised

qualifications and offer individual unit assessment.

Candidates may re-sit each unit (i.e. Skill) ONCE before claiming their GCSE.

A candidate who re-sits the speaking must submit marks for TWO NEW TASKS. It is not possible to re-submit marks for a task which has already been used.

Explain the task

Candidates prepare the task.

Conduct of the assessments. Assessment tasks to be conducted in

controlled conditions. During test, candidate may refer to

their: Presentation title, picture or the open interaction

stimulus as appropriate. Notes and pro forma.

Each task to last between 4 to 6 minutes.

Centre assessed, Edexcel moderated.

Scheduling and assessing. Schedule about 10 minutes per

candidate: 4 – 6 minutes = conduct of the task Approximately 5 minutes to assess the

candidate’s performance. Conduct in controlled conditions. Assess as you go along:

Single assessment criteria grid for all three types of task to facilitate marking.

Recording One recording per candidate, which

must relate to one of the oral assessments for which marks are being submitted.

Centres must record a variety of task types across their cohort to reflect the task types undertaken.

Can record all oral assessments – this will help with internal moderation.
