Lesson 1

JKE

To understand the location and distribution of Climate Zones. To understand what an ecosystem is.

WALT

WILFAll: to be able to locate the climate zones on a world map. To understand the key words : living environment, rain forest, biome.

Most: To be able to show understanding of the links within a simple ecosystem.

Some: To be able to suggest reasons why ecosystems might change.

Pair work

In pairs try to work out the missing words on the following slides and an example for each!

You are working as a team. So the team with the best results will win a merit each!

1. Give your map a title.2. Make a key showing place name, temperature, rainfall, rainfall description type.3. Colour each group and link them to your map with an arrow. Use an atlas!

What is an ecosystem? • An ecosystem is a community of living

organisms (plants and animals) sharing an environment. The largest ecosystems are called biomes.

What is a biome? • A biome is a very large ecosystem e.g.

Tropical Rainforest. Activity 2:

You have 2 minutes to remember the meaning of ecosystem and biome and write it down!

JKE

Activity 3: Terms you need to sort, know. . .

Environment

The non-living environment

The living environment

A natural ecosystem

A community of plants and animals unaffected by human activity.

The natural or physical surroundings where plants and animals live.

Animals, birds, fish, insects and people.

Rocks, soil, the air and climate.

…and learn!!

JKE

An Ecological SystemThe word ecosystem is short for ecological systems. An ecosystem includes all of the living organisms in a specific area. These systems are the plants and animals interacting with their non-living environments (weather, Earth, Sun, soil, atmosphere). An ecosystem's development depends on the energy that moves in and out of that system. You could have an entire ecosystem underneath a big rock. On the other hand, you could be talking about the overall ecosystem of the entire planet (biosphere). An ecosystem can be as small as a puddle or as large as the Pacific Ocean. That ecosystem includes every living and non-living thing in the area. It is several small communities interacting with each other.

Activity 4:Describe the links between a simple ecosystem.

JKE

Writing Frame

How do I start? An ecosystem is the link between….The links need…in order to…

JKE

Acid rain damagehits Scandinavian forests

Arctic oil spill threatensCaribou grazing land

Kenyan wildlife threatenedby overgrazing

Problems for Brazil as loggersand miners clear more forest

Woodland cleared for Lake District leisure complex

Global warming blamed for Spread of desert

Activity 5: For each of the headlines shown above:a) Name the type Climate Zone it belongs to.b) Explain how plants, animals or people might benefit or suffer from the changes.

JKE

Writing Frame

Acid rain damage hits Scandinavian forests – this is found in __________ zone. Trees, plants and animals will suffer because….

Arctic oil spill threatens Caribou grazing land – this is found in…The Caribou will suffer because…

JKE

Plenary

1. List three facts which you have learnt.2. Is there anything you do not understand? What is it?3. How can you improve?
