was looking forward to comingback to his family.
But he was delighted to comehome to a home too!
With housing minister GrantShapps pushing for forcespersonnel to be first in line foraffordable housing, PrivateWilliams, marched in to hisvery own des-res.
A far cry from thecamouflage tent he lived in inAfghanistan, Adriece, 19, andpartner Stephanie Collins, 20,have just moved into thetwo-bedroomed property inMurdishaw, near Runcorn, withfour-month-old daughter Kyiah.
“We didn’t think we would bein a position to buy for a longtime,” says Adriece, 19, “sowhen I got the phone call fromStephanie saying she had notonly been looking for a housebut had found one we couldafford, I was amazed.
“It was a great feelingcoming home from the war tomove into such a lovely houseand peaceful area.”
The couple had been living atStephanie’s parents’ house butdesperately wanted their ownspace.
The cost of buying seemedwell beyond their means untiltheir estate agent told themabout shared ownership, andthey went to view a propertywhich had been developed byLiverpool Housing Trust(LHT).
They fell in love withthe two-bedroomedproperty andapplied throughHomesHub,which is partof the PlusDane Groupand the
government’s affordablehousing agent for Merseysideand Cheshire.
Through shared ownership,the couple bought a 45% sharein the property initially,meaning that they needed lessof a deposit, and a lowermortgage. They will pay areduced rent on the remainingshare to LHT, until they decideto buy 100% of the home.
“I’m proud of us,” addsStephanie, a local nurseryassistant. “We’ve done well forourselves, there’s not many
people our age whoown their ownhome. I’d certainlyadvise others to

LeonLopezWhere was the family home where yougrew up and what was it like?I lived in Toxteth in Liverpool with my mumand two brothers. I loved it. My aunty and twocousins lived next door and they are like mybrother and sister so there was a big gang ofus. We didn't have lots of money but we hadeverything we needed. I loved it. We’re stillmad close.
What is your clearest memory of thehouse?Well we lived in one house until I was about 11and my memory of that house was an amazingstreet vibe and woodchip on the walls. Thenwe moved house around the corner, where Ilived until I was 20. That house was very bigand I remember sharing a bedroom with mylittle brother and dividing it down the middlewith curtains to try and give us separate space;hanging Christmas lights around the place andmaking my brother and cousins sing and dance.
Where was the first house you boughtyourself and what did it cost?I bought a flat in Liverpool city centre when Iwas 20. It was a loft conversion. I loved it andI'm not telling you how much it cost.
What made you want to buy it?I was working on Brookside at the time andeveryone kept telling me I had to get on theproperty ladder. So myself and Jennifer Ellison,who was also in Brookside at that time, wentflat hunting and the first place we saw Jennyloved and she told me I had to buy it. It wasamazing.
What are the important things you lookfor when buying a house?Goodness. I haven't bought a place since!
Are you a DIY trier or do you leave it tothe experts?I am definitely a trier! But I probably shouldleave it to the experts.
What is the one thing you love mostabout your current home?I don't have one! I moved to London when Iwas 24 and sold my flat the year after withevery intention of buying somewhere else, but Ihave never stopped still with work so it’s neverhappened. I always think I should buy again butwith the current climate and economicsituation and also with my work and touringwith We Will Rock You (most recently inLiverpool at the Empire) I don’t really need ahome and I am pretty happy renting when I do.

It found that almost a third oftradespeople consider their laptopto be as important to theirbusiness as their hammer or drill,and almost a quarter use an iPadfor work.
Some 25% of builders, plumbers,electricians and carpenters havetheir own website, and as much as35% of their business is generatedby it.
The survey also revealed thattradespeople make an effort tolook presentable. One third admitto spending time and money in thelast five years on looking good, and34% claim to be in better shapenow compared to five years ago.

Q After falling off one, I’m notvery keen on going up laddersto do DIY. Is there analternative?A Lots of DIY jobs involveladders - although someladders are more stable andcomfortable to use, as well asbeing shorter, than others - soyou’ll be a bit stuck if you don’twant to go up one. Analternative is a work platform,

24 Hour Garden, in which threeinteractive show gardens transformfrom day to night in minutes - an‘outdoor living room’, completewith a ’floating carpet’, the‘tranquil escape’, with its uniqueboulder lounger and driftwoodpanelled walls, and the‘contemporary kitchen garden forentertaining’, with its tea cup walland bold dining set.
However, there’s a limit toextending the season – and no one’sgoing to be out there fine-dining inthe pouring rain, agrees
award-winning TV garden designerJames Alexander-Sinclair, who willbe discussing The 24 Hour Gardenat this year’s show.
“The point of 24-hour gardeningis not so much sitting in it, butlooking at it. You can sit in yoursitting room and power a switchand there you have it.”
Does he approve of outdoorgarden carpet? There’s a largepause followed by a snigger.
“I’m not quite sure what the pointof it is,” he concedes. “Outdoorcarpet’s a marvellous idea if you
like outdoor hoovering. But it’s partof the idea of the garden being anextra room to the house.”
However, he’s more open mindedto new-fangled furniture making itsway into the great outdoors.
“There’s something ratherwonderful about taking bits ofinside outside. I remember onelunch party where we just took allthe furniture outside and put it onthe lawn. It was weird, wonderfuland exciting.”
Alexander-Sinclair comes up withsomewhat more conventional waysof enjoying your garden all yearround, such as placingwinter-flowering plants with strongscents like Sarcococca confusa orwinter-flowering honeysuckle(Lonicera fragrantissima) nearyour front door.
“You will catch the scent as youfumble for your front door key –and that is using your garden in thewinter.
“Lighting certainly extends thelife of the garden as seasons change,so you are not just looking at plantsbut the effect of light on plantswhen planning your garden for theyear.
“You can sit there with the fireblazing and if you light your gardenproperly you can see all theskeletons and shadows of yourgarden, which extends the life ofyour garden, as does a pond with afountain with a light in it.”
In winter, clipped hedges such asyew and box look fantastic, even infrost.
“Anything clipped andarchitectural, with crisp lines,looks good in winter. In summerplants are diaphanous, fluffy andwafting about. It’s like people. In
summer we all wanderabout in pretty, floatythings, but in winter weare wrapped up andkeep everything as closeas possible. A clippedevergreen hedge with froston it is always a lovely thingto see.”
Will any of the gadgetshe’s seen at this year’s showcatch on and be the norm inthe garden in 10 years’ time?
“No,” he sighs. “The wholeessence of a gadget is that it’s apassing fad.”

AS ALL other perennials seem to have faded inthe cooler weather, my lavender-blue Aster xfrikartii ‘Monch’ have now come into their own,bringing a welcome burst of colour with theirdaisy-like flowers with yellow centres.
This particular variety is trouble-free andlong-flowering, blooming from July to October,growing to around 90cm (3ft) tall. Others inthe A. x frikartii group include ‘Wunder vonStafa’, which produces paler flowers whichmay need staking, and ‘Flora’s Delight’, adwarf variety with lilac flowers and greyfoliage.
Asters can be planted in summer to fill gapsleft by early-flowering perennials, and lookgreat in silver, grey or pastel schemes. Forautumn colour they can be combined withhardy chrysanthemums or Japaneseanemones, while other autumn foliage canprovide a perfect foil to the mauve-pinkflowers.
There are many other varieties of aster,such as A. novi-belgii, better known asMichaelmas daisies. All do well in sun or lightshade in reasonable soil, but most need to bekept well watered in dry soils.

Rents on the rise asdemandcontinues
RENTS recorded theirlargest monthly increase ina year during August, saysthe latest buy-to-let indexfrom LSL PropertyServices.
In August, the averagerent in England andWales rose by 1.2% to£713 per month, which is£27 higher than in August2010.
On a monthly basis,rents increased fastest inWales and south-eastEngland, where they roseby 2.1%.
The next biggestincreases were in Londonand south-west England,with rises of 1.5% and1.3% respectively. Rentshave only declined in theMidlands since July, fallingby 0.4% in both the WestMidlands and the EastMidlands.
In the last year, Londonhas seen stronger rentalinflation than otherregions of England andWales as rents hit a newrecord high of £1,025 permonth in August, up by6.6% or £63 per monthduring the past year.

annual increases were inthe West Midlands (6%)and the North East(4.3%). In the last year,average rents have risenin all regions exceptYorkshire and theHumber (-0.5%).
