In order to read the eBooks from our digital library on your computer, or to transfer them to a portable device, you will need to install some free software:

•To download Adobe eBooks on your computer, you need Adobe® Digital Editions. Adobe Digital Editions requires Adobe Flash Player, and JavaScript must be enabled in your browser.http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/

You can also download this software by clicking on the appropriate software title in this box (located at the bottom of the search boxes on the left side each screen) will take you to the websites where the software can be downloaded.

17

Downloading Adobe Digital Editions

Install Adobe Digital Editions: If you accept the terms of the license agreement, click the 'I Agree' button.

After the program installs, there should be an icon on your desktop that looks like a brown square with an open book in the center. This is the desktop shortcut for the Adobe Digital Editions. If it is not there, click on "start" and find the program in the programs folder to open it.

When you open the program for the first time, it will ask you to activate the program. This is for copyright reasons and it is recommended that you activate the software. To do this, you will need to create an Adobe ID (username and password).

When you finish activating the software, Adobe Digital Editions is ready to use.

When finished, attempt to download a title if you have one already checked out.

Click “Download now”

On the next screen, click

18

Downloading Overdrive Media Console

Install Overdrive Media Console and Windows Media Player Security Upgrade:

After the program downloads, click “run” if the option is asked.

After the program installs, there should be an icon on your desktop that looks like a green triangle with four white bubbles around it. This is the desktop shortcut for the Overdrive Media Console. If it is not there, click on "start" and find the program in the programs folder to open it.

After the Overdrive Media Console program opens, locate the button called "Tools" at the top of the program window. In the drop down menu, select "Windows Media Player Security Upgrade". A window will pop up saying that you need to upgrade security settings for Windows Media Player. Click "Ok" to continue with the upgrade.

After the upgrade installs, Windows Media Player may open. If it does, you can close it.When finished, attempt to download a title if you have one already checkout.

Click Download Now

Note: If a message pops up asking you if you want to open the file or save, click on “Open”

19

Downloading Mobipocket Reader

Mobipocket Reader requires registration. All copies of Mobipocket Reader have a unique registration code called a 'PID' (Personal Identifier). To register Mobipocket Reader, you need to sign in to this site using your library card number, and update your account information with your Mobipocket Reader PID(s). You can register up to three PIDs, enabling you to read Mobipocket eBooks on up to three devices.

Click “Download”

Note: If a message pops up asking you if you want to run the file or save, click on “Run”

20

You are now ready to download the titles you have checked out to a PC.

If you have already downloaded Adobe Digital Edition and Overdrive Media Console to your computer, simply click the Download button.

If the necessary software is not on your computer, it will prompt you to download the software first.

21

When you click download, it may ask you if you want to create a folder for the title. Click “yes” to continue.

22

If it asks you if you want to “open” or “save” the title, click “open.” It only asks you to do this on some computers and it may not happen on yours.

23

Another window will open that lists a number of parts. These parts would represent a CD if it was a physical audiobook. Example: If it has 5 parts, it would have 5 CD's. Download all the parts to listen to the entire title.

Make sure that the pop-up blocker is turned off on your PC.

Once you have selected all the parts to download that you want, the Overdrive Media Console will open and the title will start to download.

On the bottom right of the Overdrive Media Console window, a green or blue bar will show the progress of the download. Each part will download separately.

24

For an ebook, Adobe Digital Editions should automatically open when the download starts. It may look like nothing is happening, but after a few seconds, you should start to see the title downloading in the Adobe Editions program.

25

To play a title, simply double-click on the title in the Overdrive Media Console window and it should start to play.

26

Downloading titles to a library computer…

Use a college PC. These already have Adobe Digital Editions and Overdrive Media Console installed. County computers do not have this software installed and will not allow you to download it.

Adobe Digital Editions will need to be activated on the library PC using the patron’s Adobe ID.

To do this…•Open Adobe Digital Editions. The 'Setup Assistant' dialog box is displayed. •Click 'Continue'. The 'Authorize Computer' screen is displayed. •Enter your Adobe ID (email address) and password. Click 'Activate'. •Click 'Finish' to close the 'Setup Assistant' dialog box.• When the patron is done, unactivate Adobe Digital Editions.

27

Items checked out from Digital Media Catalog will automatically be checked in after the checkout time has expired. The title will still appear on your portable device, but you will no longer be able to access it. You will need to delete the title from your portable device.

Digital Media Catalog check out and return policies:

Turning in Titles EarlyTo return an eBook early, you will need to use Adobe Digital Editions. First you will need to click on "Library View" which again is located in the top left corner of the program.

Next, if you move your mouse over the cover of the title you want to return, a triangle will appear in the upper left corner of the book jacket. If you left click on this triangle, a drop down menu will appear. "Return Borrowed Item" is one of the options.

Selecting this will return the item and delete it off your computer, but it will not delete it from any portable reading device that you may have transferred the title to. The title will no longer be checked out to you, but you will need to delete the title from the computer using the same triangle you used for returning the item early.

Due to licensing agreements with the audiobook publishers, eAudio titles cannot be returned early.  Only eBooks (EPUB and PDF) can be returned early at this time.

Titles downloaded through our OverDrive library cannot be renewed at this time. You will need to check out the title again. If it is unavailable, you will need to place it on hold.

You may check out a maximum of 10 titles at one time
