ISSUES WITH NYSDOT’S EXIT 59A PROPOSAL
• Barnes Road is a Town of Brookhaven highway
• The expected traffic that would be added to this roadway would overload this
currently lightly-used road.
• Flooding occurs during rain events on the roadway from its southern terminus at
Montauk Highway to Sunrise Service Rd. S. due to erratic varying elevation.
• This evacuation route could be compromised if flooding occurs before or during a
storm’s arrival.
• The clearance of the Sunrise Highway bridge above Barnes Road is 13 feet,
4 inches.
• This prohibits taller vehicles to pass underneath the roadway.
ELEVATION PROFILE OF BARNES ROAD
Due to varying elevation throughout the roadway, flooding occurs during heavy rainfall
ISSUES WITH CURRENT EXIT 59
• The interchange with Sunrise Highway (NY-27) & Wading River Road has more
issues than at Barnes Road:
• The intersection with Sunrise South Service Road (the EB Exit 59 ramp) and
Jerusalem Hollow Road has issues including:
• Excess speed coming from vehicles on Sunrise Highway to Wading River Road with drivers
coming from the opposite direction and Jerusalem Hollow Road (including constant school
bus traffic).
• Elevation from the beginning of the EB Exit 59 ramp drops to Jerusalem Hollow Road
drastically, decreasing driver visibility and safety.
• Increased building along both sides of Sunrise Highway has limited access to and
from Sunrise Highway.
• In case of emergency from Eastport South Manor Jr./Sr. High School, William Floyd
Middle School, and Center Moriches High School, access to/from Sunrise Highway is
currently limited.

MAIN AREA OF CONCERN
There is NO exit speed
advisory approaching Exit
59.
There also is NOT a two-way
traffic warning sign for
eastbound traffic.
WB traffic must yield to EB
traffic.
Even if both warning
signs are added, drivers
will not slow down to
accommodate opposing
traffic, posing danger to
those traveling to/from
ESM HS, **especially
bus drivers**.
There is NO speed limit
for Sunrise Service Rd.

There is NO speed limit

Drivers from the ramp are driving downhill towards the intersection with no ramp speed restriction.
Drivers from the Sunrise Service Road S. have to yield to opposing traffic.
Drivers from Jerusalem Hollow Road have to stop for traffic from the ramp.
Drivers from both the Service Road and Jerusalem Hollow Road look upwards towards the ramp traffic and only
can see 163 feet from the intersection westward on a good weather day.
That only leaves a driver from the ramp just over **2 seconds** to stop if a vehicle is turning right onto Sunrise
Service Road S. from Jerusalem Hollow Road or left onto Jerusalem Hollow Road from Sunrise Service Road S.
This intersection has school bus usage every day during the school year.
Even with added signage, drivers will not change their incoming speeds.

ESM’S NEW REVISION OF NYSDOT’S EXIT 59A PROPOSAL
• Exit 59A:
• All proposed ramps with this interchange would be eliminated.
• Exit 59 changes:
• A new EB exit ramp & WB entrance ramp west of Moriches-Middle Island Rd. will replace the existing ones
for Wading River Road.
• The exit speed advisory would be posted for 35 MPH.
• This eliminates the dangerous turn for all at the end of the EB NY-27 Exit 59 ramp at Jerusalem Hollow Road.
• Aids emergency response time to Eastport South Manor High School, William Floyd Middle School, & Center
Moriches High School if needed.
• Both service roads along Sunrise Highway would be extended west from Wading River Road to Moriches-
Middle Island Road.
• Both roadways would be bi-directional, aiding school and new development traffic.
• Helps traffic flow from Wading River Road to Moriches-Middle Island Road.
• Traffic lights would be needed with both Sunrise Service Roads & Moriches-Middle Island Rd.
• The EB entrance ramp and the WB exit ramp would remain the same.
