Objective
• Summarize 4 years of ARC experience in Northern Illinois
• Illustrate value to area participants
• Discuss utilizing PRRS ARC for PED containment
Principles #1
• Central LEADERSHIP that is 100% committed to the cause is an essential key that continually drives the process forward as the project is a marathon, not a sprint
NE IL PRRS ARC
• DeKalb County– #2 hog county in Illinois– ~230,000 head total– ~30,000 sows– Borders Chicago Suburbs on one side

Commitment to ARC • Began issuing Alerts/Notifications of PED
positive farms with first positive results– Already had an email database from PRRS ARC– Producers/Allied Industry were familiar with the
concept and format– Began adding additional allied industry
• Diesel, Propane, Trucking, Auto Mechanic Shops• Contract Growers/Employees (beyond owners)
Principle #2
• Strong communication and transparency are essential to promote and strengthen buy-in.
Communication• VITAL to success of ARC
– Between veterinarians– Between producers– Between veterinarians and producers
• Use herd visits to share ARC successes and failures– Allied industry– These are long-term projects focused more on
people & relationships– Success is possible!!
Communication• Benefits of an ARC project
– We have a system for PEDV• Communication channels are already there
– Emails, site information
• Change in mentality of producers– Ready & willing to share
– Change in status updates• PRRSv and PEDV Break Notification Letter
– Producers pay more attention to this than anything
– Testing reminders• Focus on high risk sites• Hold us all accountable

Please notify your veterinarian to review biosecurity protocols on your site(s).
PEDv Transparency• VITAL to success of PEDv containment
– “First Alert” list of anyone that would touch site prior to confirmation
• Feed, R&M, Stud, Manure Removal, Employees/Service Personnel
– No producer has refused to test/share results– Notifications go out as soon as producer is notified– Did not sign separate PEDv disclosure forms
• Late harvest, holidays, then PEDv hit – no opportunity to get forms signed
• Didn’t want to maintain 2 databases (PRRS, PED)• Positive producer must give verbal ok to Veterinarian
Principle #3
• To quickly identify and respond to new PRRS breaks, the established surveillance plan should be adhered to before, during , and after a stabilization/elimination plan is put in place

Principle #4
• All breeding stock entering the area should be tested PRRS-negative prior to entry into a sow farm

Principle #5
• Sow herds that become infected with field virus must move to stabilization plan, followed by an effort to eliminate field virus from the farm

Treatment Costs• Break down medication
cost at group or barn level
• Further breakdown medication cost to route of administration
Principle #7
• With the area free of PRRS-positive breeding stock, and limited weaner and feeder pig movements, the most serious exposure of the area to outside field virus introduction is from contaminated butcher trucks. The goal is to have 100% of butcher trucks be washed, disinfected, and dried prior to loading.
Principle #8
• The use of Modified Live Virus (MLV) PRRS Vaccine is a valuable tool to reduce the shedding within and spread from infected sites as well as reducing the severity of breaks from new field virus introductions

Successes
• Producers were asked to STOP LVI usage– To our knowledge, no LVI use in area
• Producers were encouraged to use Ingelvac® PRRS MLV as a tool for immune stimulation in control and elimination attempts and for the reduction of shedding and spread on their site and to the area – 76% of sows are vaccinated– 79% of finishing pigs are vaccinated
• Production numbers continue to improve
Principle #9
• Use of Live Virus Inoculation (LVI) is a known disseminator of virulent PRRS virus. As a result, use of LVI in the area is not an option.
Principle #10
• The use of filters is relevant for high-importance sites such as boar studs, gilt breeders, or sow farms in areas with high risk exposure
