The Prototype Fast Reactor (PFR) was the

second and last fast reactor to be built in Britain.

PFR had the dual role of providing power to the

national grid and offering unique research and

development facilities. PFR provided information

for future design and operation of large

commercial fast reactor stations.

Key Facts

• Construction took place from 1967 – 1975

• Operational between 1975 – 1994

• Reactor had electrical output of 250 MW (enough to

supply city the size of Aberdeen)

• 9250GWh – total amount of electricity produced

• Dounreay's fast reactors were only plants built in

Britain to use liquid metal

• Fuel removed 1994 - 1996

• 1,500 tonnes of primary and secondary sodium lliquid

metal was removed and turned into harmless sea

water.

• Steam raising plant and turbine removed.

• Preparations for reactor dismantlement underway.
