dogs and their people Photographs by Todd Smith

One of my earliest Mad Magazine memories is of a piece about dogs and their owners. Wonderfully bizarre caricatured drawings depicted people that had the same facial features and expressions as their pet dogs. I would love to be able to say that these photographs are the real life proof of Mad’s thesis, but I can’t. Sometimes dog and master share a common spark, but often the dog is just a separate creature at the end of a leash. Aside from that, I find that people with their pet dogs are terrific subjects for photographs. First, their relationship provides a built-in visual tension; big/small, fur/skin, naked/clothed, two-legged/four legged, etc. But also, I have found that humans generally become less self conscious when posing with their dogs, which makes for a better portrait. This is not always true for the dogs, however, and the outtakes of this book included a lot of blurry fur. I hope you enjoy the photos.
