HELDERBERG: PUBLIEKE EN PRIVAATVENNOOTSKAPPE BEPLAN
Sakekamerwil ophef
DALEEN FOUCH
n Herlewing van burgerregteli-
ke samelewing is besig om in die
Helderberg plaas te vind wat die
opheffingvandie distrik tendoel
het.
Die Helderberg Sakekamer het
verlede week aangekondig dat die
organisasie pro-aktief betrokke
raak by die opheffing van die Hel-
derberg, publieke en privaat-ven-
nootskappe te stig en positiewe ver-
andering te stimuleer.
Adriaan Theron, sekretaris van
die Helderberg Sakekamer, s die
sakekamer was voorheen slegs n
netwerk-organisasie, maar die be-
stuur wil vanjaar aktief n rol speel
om n ontwikkelingsplan vir die
Helderberg te fasiliteer.
Hy verduidelik dat die plaaslike
regering reeds n raamwerk vir die
ontwikkeling en opheffing van die
Helderberg in plek het, naamlik die
Helderberg Distriksplan, wat die
ruimtelike ontwikkelingsplan en
omgewingsbestuur-raamwerk uit-
eensit.TheronsdieHelderbergSa-
kekamer het drie punte gedentifi-
seer wat veral aandag moet geniet.
Die eerste is die lok van besigheid.
Hier is goeie ontwikkelingspoten-
siaalvirgrootmaatskappyeomvan-
uit die Kaapstad-sakekern te ver-
huis na die Helderberg-omgewing
om so druk op die paaie-infrastruk-
tuur te verlig. Die tweede is om be-
soekers en toeriste te lok na dieHel-
derberg. Theron meen die Helder-
berg het n spog-kuslyn, n
fantastiese wynroete en asemro-
wende natuurskoon wat bemark
moet word. Hy s n voorbeeld hier-
van is die feit dat walvisse die Hel-
derberg-kuslynbesoek,maaromdat
die Helderberg nie as n walvis be-
stemming bemark word nie, lok die
area nie daardie nismark van toe-
ristenie.DiederdepuntwatdieHel-
derberg Sakekamer aan aandag wil
skenk is om die ekonomiese aktiwi-
teite inKuswegteondersteunomdit
lewensvatbaar temaak.Theronver-
duidelik dat alhoewel daar wel be-
sighede is wat finansieel baie suk-
sesvol is, vind ander besighede dit
moeilik om volhoubaar te wees. Hy
meen die ontwikkeling vanKusweg
om ekonomiese aktiwiteit te onder-
steun is noodsaaklik.
Daantjie Malan, nuut verkose
voorsitter van die Helderberg Sake-
kamer, s die Helderberg het baie
potensiaal en is n ideale bestem-
ming in Kaapstad. Malan s die nu-
we energie in die Helderberg Sake-
kamer is wat nodig is om positiewe
verandering te dryf. Ek is baie op-
gewonde oor die planne. Malan,
wat ook voorsitter van die Strand
belastingbetalersvereniging is,
meen die twee organisasies trek
aandieselfde tuigensalgoedsaam-
werk om dieselfde doel te bereik.
Raadslid Stuart Pringle, voorsit-
ter van subraad 8, het die aankondi-
gingverwelkomensdieburgerreg-
telikesamelewingindieHelderberg
begin al hoe meer aktief betrokke
raak. Voorbeelde hiervan is die
nuut gestigte vereniging wat rels
vir die stap van honde in Radloff-
park reguleer. Hy meen slegs wan-
neer die gemeenskap aktief betrok-
ke raak en eienaarskap oor hulle
omgewing neem, sal werklike posi-
tiewe verandering plaasvind.
Theron s dieHelderbergSakeka-
mer wil hoofsaaklik by die Helder-
berg-gemeenskappe uitvindwat vir
hulle belangrik is in terme van ont-
wikkelingvandieareaennooialdie
burgerlike organisasies in die Hel-
derberg om ook insette te lewer.
Die Helderberg Sakekamer het
rolspelers na n vergadering genooi
om die konsep verder te verken op
29 Mei by Avontuur Wynlandgoed.

Helplessnessafterdevastating fire
DELIAH BRINKHUIS
CaraDeutschmann of SomersetWest and
her family are trying to put their lives to-
gether after a fire at their home on Tues-
day.
David Morris, Deutschmanns son who
lived with her, says he went to the bathroom
and had left his cellphone in the charger on
his bed. On his return to his room a fewmin-
utes later his bed was alight with flames al-
ready leaking at the ceiling.
Morris, a nature conservationist, says he
only had time to carry the familys two dogs
downstairs, ensuring that they and the cat
were safely outside before the entire floorup-
stairs was engulfed in flames.
He is grateful for the help of neighbours,
emergency services, including thepolice and
the security company that helped.
Yesterday (Wednesday)Deutschmann, her
daughter Lilma-Jean and David were at the
home that holds countless memories for
them, as their belongingswere being packed
away for storageby insurance companystaff.
Deutschmann (60) says her parents bought
theirhomefromawell-knownSomersetWest
coupleMary andEphriamLevinson about 35
years ago.
Deutschmann proudly showed off the an-
tique furniture in the dining room that her
dad had made, and her eyes becomes moist
as she recalls the items he hadmade thatwas
burnt in the fire.
When Lilma-Jean joined her mom to tell
her that Dolly could not be salvaged from
the ruins tears silently run down the wom-
ens faces. Dolly was a gift from Deut-
schmanns great-grandmother on her birth-
day which she says has faithfully travelled
with her in the past six decades.
Deutschmann says she hopes that she and
David, who is temporarily staying with Lil-
ma-Jean, will be able tomove back into their
home in three to six months.
Im old, she says as she protectively
wraps her arms around herself, I need my
security blanket.
But... the most important things have
been saved- my pets and my son, she says.

Hberg couple land inBahamas
after7500kmof rowing
Were ripped and shredded like
a tuna salad and have both lost
a lot of weight, but were very
grateful to be here after not see-
ing land for 74 days.
These were the words of Riaan
Manser Helderbergs famous ad-
venturer during an exclusive tele-
phone interview with the District-
Mail onTuesdayeveningshortlyaf-
ter landing at Cockburn Town, the
capital of San Salvador in the Baha-
mas.
Riaan together with his
girlfriend Vasti Gelden-
huys are rowing fromAfri-
ca to New York in a seven
metre rowing boat. They
left the coastal town of
Marrakesh in Morocco on
31 December 2013. They
have to date rowed around
7 500 km and have 2 400 km
to go before they reach
New York, which should
take themroughly another
month.
Vasti is the first woman
on theAfrican continent to
undertake a rowing expe-
dition such as this.
Its such a surreal expe-
rience to have landed on
Long Bay on San Salvador
Island, only six kilometres
from where Columbus
landed in 1492.
We didnt even know
that Long Bay, where we
landed this morning (16
April) was where Colum-
bus landed, its completely
surreal.
We were both so wobbly and
shakywhenwegot off our little boat
we could barely walk. It felt so
strange to be on land again and
walking was a bit of a challenge.
Riaan said that during the last
four days before they landed they
had seen more and more cruise lin-
ers. He explained that because their
rowing boat was so tiny one of the
cruise liners almostwent right over
them.
We could see the passengers on
the cruise liner and that massive
shipwas getting closer and closer to
us and it was obvious that he
couldnt seeus. I eventuallycontact-
ed the ships captain via radio and
told him that his ship was bearing
down on us and to alter course. The
captain said he couldnt see us, but
he did change course in time.
Riaan said that structurally the
rowing boat was still fine, but there
were a few minor repairs that they
had to make.
He explained that after
they capsized they lost the
satellite phone and some
equipment and thought it
was the end of the world.
However, they re-as-
sessed the situation and
sorted everything out and
carried on.
Somuch couldve gone
wrong during that 74-day
crossing, were just
thankful that were okay
and the boat is fine.
Riaan, who is a keen
fisherman, did however
point out that the fishing
had been excellent and
they had already caught
seven different species of
fish including, shark, do-
rado and tuna.
He said that just before
landing on the islandVas-
ti had caught a 10 kg tuna
andhehadboatedanhuge
dorado, which he estimat-
ed was about 18 to 20 kg.
Theplannowis thatwe
rest and recover physically for two
to three days, eat some good nutri-
tious foodandrepair theboatbefore
starting thenext legofour journey.
The island is very small and laid
back and only has the basic necessi-
ties so we wont be able to sort out
everything on the boat, but well be
fine.
He stressed that this 74-day
stretch had been very tough, both
emotionally and physically and
they had both also lost a lot of
weight. When they left Morocco he
weighed 104 kg and now weighed
89 kgwhileVastihad lostabout 9kg.
During the interview Riaan said
they had just got back from a small
supermarket on the island laden
with treats and snacks such as
chips, biscuits, sweets, cold drinks
and beer.
Vasti said she was particularly
moved by the reception they re-
ceived from the locals, especially
the children who sang songs of joy
whentheycameinto thesmallmari-
na.
Riaan is amazed that the people
ofCockburnTowntreated themlike
absolute royalty and seemed to be
in awe of them.He said the adminis-
trator of the town personally wel-
comed them to the town and went
outofhisway tomake themfeelwel-
come.
Wecantwait to start thenext leg
of our journey and get to New York.
Were really missing our families,
friends, dogs and the Helderberg in
general.
Riaan insisted on using the Dis-
trictMail, to thank all the people in
the Helderberg for their fantastic
support via Twitter and said it was
these people who gave them the
courage and inspiration to carry on
and finish their voyage.
Riaan and Vasti land on Cockburn Town, the capital of San Salvador in
the Bahamas. With them are some local children who came to welcome
them to their town.
Riaan and Vasti were overcome with joy on reaching
San Salvador island in the Bahamas after being at
sea for 74 days.

Newmosque forGordons Bay
CASSY VAN EEDEN
The Gordons Bay Islamic
Trust (GBIT) has identified a
growing need within the local
Muslim community for a
mosque in the town.
The trust was established to
address this need and oversee
the process of buying property
and developing the facilities.
The trust has identified a
property on the corner of Roos
Street and Lancaster Road in
Gordons Bay.
An agreement has been met
between the seller and theGor-
dons Bay Islamic Society. The
trust is in theprocessof raising
funds to secure a deposit.
Once the land is secured, col-
lection drives will be held to
raise funds for the building.
Abdul Sonday, a trustee of

that needs to be done before
building can begin.

extinguish the blaze. He says the fire may have
been caused by a burning candle, which ignited
other items in the wendy house.
The wooden structure was gutted in the fire,

In February 2012 and onher 33rd birthday,
Sonja received the devastating news that the
mole she had removed from her neck was
cancerous. Fast forward to 18 months later,
shewas experiencing severe pain in her low-

cancer had spread.
Shewas diagnosedwith stage IVMetastat-

Within a fewweeks, the cancer had spread
vigorously and was detected inmost parts of
her body her chest, bones, abdominal solid
organs, soft tissue nodules and multiple
lymphnodesintheneck.Thebiggestconcern
was the tumours she developed onher brain.
Once it was established that she had B-Raf

Unfortunately in her case, surgery is not
an option and the trial medication designed
to treat the late stages of Metastatic Malig-

currently not available in SA.
Therefore, she will have to seek medical
treatment in the United States.

Horseenjoysa refreshing summer shower
On Friday 11 April 2014, in the middle
of the unseasonal heat wave we experi-
enced, I was at the horse farms behind
the Lourensford Wine Estate.
In one of the camps, a horse was hav-
ing a lazy afternoon shower under an
irrigationpoint in the camp. When I ap-
proached the horse, he turned his head
towards me, gave me a funny look, and
continuedwithhis shower as if Iwasnt
there. I got the distinct impression he
toldme that this ismy shower, go cool
down somewhere else.
So I just politely snapped him with
my camera, excused myself, and went
to look for human refreshment.
I gladly donate the photo of the Lou-
rensford horse having a shower to the
Districtmail.
Yours faithfully

Our family has owned a private dwell-
ing on the Strand beach front for four
generations. Over the years we have
grown to accept the increase in traffic
and its accompanying noise.
What is however, increasingly unac-
ceptable is the noise levels of most mo-
torcycles. Some of the riders appear to
get some kind of thrill when they gun
their bikes between speed humps and
I have even seen one do wheelies for
most of the length of Beach Road a

al noise.
The decibel levels must be in excess
of 140 in some instances.
My question is: unless the law on ex-
cess noise in public areas has been re-
scinded, why do traffic officers pretend
that they are deaf?
If they did their jobs properly they
could bring in a lot of revenue for the
city.
The solution to this problem will be
to ban motorcycles from using Beach
Road. But in a democratic country the
bikerswill probably claim their human
rights are being affected.

It is also a time when many fami-

Due to the fact that the Easter

Atreat forbaby inSomersetWest
CASSY VAN EEDEN
Whoever thought that the alter-
native medical practice of re-
flexology was only for grown-
ups is about to be provenwrong.
The highly beneficial properties
of reflexology is now available for
children too, and it is quickly be-
coming a world-wide sensation.
And guess what?
It is now available in Somerset
West.
Baby Reflex is an international
brand.
Reflexology is a gentle, non in-
vasive therapy that encourages the
body to balance and heal itself,
says Laura Norris, a qualified in-
ternational Baby Reflex instruc-
tor. Norris and colleague Julie
Anne Vosloo have launched the
South African Baby Reflexology
headquarters in Somerset West
where Baby Reflexology classes
will be commencing soon.
So how does it work?
It involves applying finger or
thumb pressure to specific points
on hands and feet, said Norries.
These points are called reflex-
es and reflect ormirror the organs
and structures of the body as well
as a persons emotional health.
The Baby Reflexology technique
and brand was researched and de-
veloped by reflexology expert Jen-
nyLee in theUnitedKingdom,who
adapted reflexology techniques to
specifically suit theneeds of babies
and toddlers.
Baby Reflex offers a three week
- a total of four and a half hours -
course for parents which will
equip parents to help their babies
in the most vital and basic needs
of their babies, said Norris.
Parents will be taught methods
to enhance and cope with diges-
tion, sleeping and comforting and
the general well-being of their ba-
bies, which includes teething and
childhood ailments, she said.
Parents who are interested in at-
tending these workshops can con-
tact Laura Norris on 082 417 7944.
Sandra Larson, Julie Vosloo and Laura Norris of Baby Reflex are interna-
tionally trained in Baby Reflexology and have brought the brand to South
Africa for the first time, with head offices in Somerset West.

IN SOLIDARITY AGAINST VIOLENCE: Anglican churches throughout
the Western Cape participated in a silent protest this past Sunday in re-
sponse to increased violence in communities. The protest was in response
to a call from Bishop of the False Bay Diocese, Rev. Margaret Vertue. An-
glican churches across the Helderberg, including the All Saints Church in
Somerset West, heed to the call and participated in a silent witness
against violence and the incidence of abuse of women and children in the
Western Cape. The action was to raise awareness of the high levels of
crime, violence and drug-related incidents as well as to stand in solidarity
with those personally affected by this scourge.

wat in die betrokke

is, kan jy sien dat hy
inderwaarheid min-

Hy het steeds net n

gevaar verder is dat
indien die klint nog

hy in n stadium gaan

Dit is werklik baie belangrik
vir beleggers om hierteen te
waak.
Geldmarkbeleggings, of vaste
beleggings by die bank, het wel sy
plek, maar dit is nie vir die lang
termyn bedoel nie.
Omseker temaak dat jy inflasie
klop, is dit belangrik dat daar n
gedeelte van jou geld in een of an-
der vorm aan aandele
blootgestel word.
n Goeie voorbeeld
isStabielebeleggings-

Hierdie fondse dra
lae risiko en daar
word daarmee altyd
gepoog om inflasie
met nagenoeg 3% te
klop.
Vir die konserwa-

goeie alternatief teen-
oor n geldmarkbeleg-

om dit vir 18 maande

Deur jou kinders se verjaardag-

los, is dus ook totaal nalatig.
Wat jy eintlik doen, is om jou
kind se spaargeld stadig maar se-
ker deur die kanker te laat op-
vreet.
n Belegger bel my die ander
dag ommy oor sy belegging uit
te vra. Die oom is 68 jaar oud
en hy en sy vrou lewe tans van
die rente wat hulle op n beleg-
ging by n bank ontvang. Die
R1 400 000 is in n geldmark-
fonds bel waarvan die op-
brengs sowat 5% per jaar be-
dra.
Die rente van R6 000 per maand
is tans genoeg vir hulle om van
te leef, maar hulle moet hul sente
mooi omdraai om uit te kom.
In hulle geval bly die kapitaal
presies dieselfde, dus geen verlies
aan kapitaal nie. Of is daar?
Ek het dit aan die klint verdui-
delik dat sy geld in werklikheid
elke jaar verminder.
Hy het my nie geglo nie, aange-
sien sy state vanaf die bank elke
maand toon dat hy steeds
R1 400 000 as belegging het.
Dit is wel so, maar wat hy nie
besef nie is dat inflasie, die kan-
ker van n belegging, besig is om
sy belegging se waarde op te vreet
Tans staan ons inflasiekoers op
6%. Dit beteken dat indien jy
R6 000 per maand gebruik vir
kruideniersware, sal jy oor 12
maande vir dieselfde mandjie

A MORNING TO REMEMBER: A group of Helderberg Hospice patients were recently
treated to a mornings outing and tea at Monkey Town. They thoroughly enjoyed the guided
tour of the facility, marvelling at the antics of the monkeys, after which they were treated to
a generous tea provided by Rosalind Grobler, manager of Monkey Town. Events like these
are a real highlight in the lives of the patients and Helderberg Hospice is grateful for the
generosity and hospitality shown by Monkey Town. Enjoying the tea are Keith Gregor, Dalene
Reyneke, Michelle Jantjies, Sophie Davids, Joan Marais, Berta Arnolds, Monkey Town manag-
er Ros Grobler, Mardia Vermeulen, Freddie Salman, Heinrich Losper and Desiree Arendse.
EASTER EGG SALE: The
Somerset West Cake Dec-
orators Guild (SCDG) held
a very successful Easter-
egg sale last Friday when
they sold about 200
handcrafted easter eggs
at Waterstone Village.
Annerie MacDonald,
chairperson of the
(SCDG), says the 24
members made the 250
easter eggs over a period
of a month. This is one of
the SCDGs primary fund-
raisers and the money is
used to buy material and ingredients for the guilds annual
charity Christmas drive where Christmas fruitcakes are baked
and sponsored to local welfare organisations to be raffled
off for fundraising. Here, from the left, are SCDG members
at their easter-egg table Katrina Hendriks, Annerie MacDon-
ald and Karen Currin.
Karen Currin shows the deli-
cate work that goes into
making the easter eggs.

Helderberg duowins contest
The Lions Talent Show at Root44 this past
weekendhad stars combusting as the 22 per-
formers competed for the top position.
The competition raised R10 000 in aid of
Helderberg organisations, Patch and Rape
Crisis.
Judges Antoi-
nette de Villiers
from Rhapsody
Dance Centre,
Andri Potgieter
from Stellen-
bosch Universi-
ty and Katrin
Stehmeier from
the Lions had a
difficult task of
choosing a win-
ner among tal-
ented perform-
ers.
The Helder-
berg, however,
outshone the
rest of the stars
with duo Dirkie
and Talisa of
Somerset
Wests guitar and violin rendition claiming
first prize. Cape Town based hip hop dance
group, Own Reflection, took second place
and another Somerset West resident, Ma-
sonwabeMendusdanceitem, TheKill took
third place.
Children enthusiastically hunted for
Easter eggs, but couldnot find all thehidden
treasures. Patch will therefore be selling
Easter eggs from their offices on the corner
ofDummerandDorhillRoads today (Thurs-
day) from 08:00 15:00.
Maya Jacinto (2) was
happy with her Easter
eggs treasure that she
found in the Easter egg
hunt.
