Message from District Governor Alan Guy
The Soap-Box
Congratulations to our newest Club, the C to Sea Lions. They undertook to provide kitchen staff, parking personnel, ticket sales, and set-up and take-down crews for the Valley Antiques and Collectables Sale at the Duncan Fairgrounds, August 18, 19, and 20. With the assistance of Lions from Clubs in Zones 2, 3 and 4, they pulled it off. This was a great example of a Club serving outside the box – our District theme for 2016-2017. Well done, C to Sea!
Thank you to all the Lions who traveled up to Duncan, or came from there, for all the invaluable help you provided; special mention to all those who served outside, particularly on the Friday afternoon, when it was HOT, HOT, HOT!
Photos of the early stages of the event are supplied by your energetic and creative Bulletin Editor, Lion Sheila. Turn a few pages to view their successes.
This is also the moment to extend the Cabinet’s gratitude to the Port Angeles Lions Club for their excellent and generous hosting of the Cabinet in that city, on August 21st. The location is delightful, the ferry rides are enjoyable, and the lunch was delicious. My wife and I also very much appreciated the surprise Anniversary Cake which we were delighted to share with all those who attended.
As part of the Cabinet business, we are delighted to accept the letter from ZC Lion Cec Specht stating his intention to run for the position of 2nd VDG for the 2017-2018 Lions year.
The vacancy for a ZC in Zone 3 will need to be solved very soon, by either a volunteer, or by appointment. Also, we will be eagerly seeking volunteers to step forward as the District’s Global Leadership and Global Membership Chairs for the three years beginning July 2017.
Watch for more information on our Centennial projects and events. This is a BIG event in Lions’ history; we have every right to celebrate it and promote all the positives of being a part of this great organization.
A reminder of the MD19 Convention taking place in Spokane WA, October 20-23: ZC Lion Brian Morin of the Esquimalt Club has chartered a bus which will transport Lions going to the event (October 20) from the Tsawwassen ferry terminal to Spokane and back (October 23), thus saving the vehicle cost on BC Ferries, and avoiding the long hours of driving your vehicle to eastern Washington. There are still some seats available on the bus. ZC Brian can be contacted for details, times, cost, etc, at bwmorin@gmail.com. Think of all the songs you could sing, or reading, or sleeping you could do if somebody ELSE is doing the driving!

Dear Lions,I am honored to serve as Chair-
person of your Lions Clubs Interna-tional Foundation (LCIF). I believe strongly in our Foundation, which is a vital part of Lions’ internation-al service efforts. One of the most touching moments of my life was seeing how Lions joined together with LCIF to provide food, supplies, and opportunities to the refugees struggling in Europe. I am so proud to be a part of this foundation.
LCIF helps Lions improve peoples’ lives around the world, combating vision problems, responding to major catastrophes, providing valuable life skills to youth, and so much more. LCIF helps all Lions serve by providing grant funding for your local and global humanitarian efforts, and Lions help to support LCIF’s mission.
LCIF sets a fundraising goal every year to meet Lions’ humani-tarian needs worldwide. While we do not have the final numbers yet for 2015-16, we expect that you Lions donated over US$39 million. What an incredible feat! With your help, we hope to raise just over US$45 million this year so that we may continue serving the world and promoting harmony.
I like to think of the beginning of a new year the start of some-thing great, and I am excited to embark on this journey alongside you Lions, some of the most dedicated and selfless people the world has ever seen. I know that together we will achieve many great accomplishments this year. Thank you for your dedication to our Foundation!
Sincerely,Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada
Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation

We have changed our meeting times starting this Fall. By getting away
from the noon hour meetings we are hoping to attract younger members from our community. We now meet the 2nd & 4th Mondays of the month - 6PM - at the White Spot Restaurant in Courtenay.
On another note: A Comox Valley Monarch Lion just got a motorized wheelchair which will now give him access to the outside world but his chal-lenge was getting out of the house in it!
A small step made it very difficult for him to manage this. Our Club imme-diately decided to get a ramp built for him and it was done within a few days thanks to a couple of Lions and Home Depot, who stepped up with a major reduction in material costs via their Community Service Project.

Mark your Calendars for the Annual International COASTAL CLEANUP on
Saturday, September 17.
All around the globe, volunteers will go to the world’s beaches to pick up litter and marine debris. Lions work as beach volunteers and often support the cleanups with food services, registration, photogra-phy and more.
To volunteer on Vancouver Island, con-tact the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup at www.shorelinecleanup.ca.
To volunteer in Washington State, con-tact the Washington Clean Coast Alliance at www.coastsavers.org.
Supporting volunteers is a great proj-ect for Lions as we seek to Protect Our Environment. An example is the upcoming Salmon Feed/Poetry Read in Forks, Wash-ington. This will be the second year for the annual event hosting beach volunteers to a salmon dinner and inviting poets, storytell-ers and musicians to participate in a great evening celebrating clean beaches and work toward a healthy ocean.
ALBERNI VALLEY LIONS By Lion Ron Metcalfe
On August 3, 2016, the 20th Annual Seniors’ Picnic was held
at Roger Creek Park. Thanks to a $3,000 donation by the Lions Club, seniors were treated to hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, snacks and dessert items.
In addition, project coordinator, Surjit Jhag, arranged for games, a number of prize draws, a 50/50 draw and musical entertainment. A good time was had by volunteers and seniors alike.

There is no admission and if one doesn’t have skates these are also provided free of charge.
Because of the success of our Free Skate Project, we will be offering a Free Swim commencing in April 2017 and running through June.
Please note we have changed our meeting venue. We now meet at Old Age Pensioners Hall, 2465 Labieux Road, Nanaimo on the first and third Monday of each month at 6.30 PM.
We also have a change of Club President. Our president for the Lionistic Year 2016-2017 is Lion Larrie Taylor, 250-954-3814, larriet@shaw.ca.
After a brief summer respite we will be getting very active again. Our FREE SKATE PROJECT commences on September 18 and runs
through until late March 2017. Last year was a record year as over 6,400 skaters participated in the program.!
As Gary Paterson, City of Nanaimo Recreation Coordinator Arenas recently commented: “The Lions FREE Skate is quite simply the most successful, and appreciated (by the community and our department) program we have. Thank you, so very much, for all your organization’s enthusiasm and volunteer support”.

Clallam Bay Sekiu Lions Welcome Visitors to Summer Gardens
Olympic Peninsula Lions maintain gardens at Cowan Heritage Farm in Hoko River State Park. Late summer brings visitors to the farm, who learn about the history of the farm and the surrounding area. Many visitors help with garden chores and harvest vegetables. Families especially enjoy introducing their children to pulling carrots, beets, rutabagas and potatoes from the ground and taking them home to eat. Volunteers work to maintain trails and to repair yard art. Lions and other volunteers work throughout the summer and fall to main-tain the vegetable and flower gardens, and to share the heritage of the farm, established in the early 1900’s.
Harvested beets and carrots.

Central Saanich LionsBy PZC Terry Bain
On August 20th we were asked again to cook up our fa-mous pancake breakfast as part of the Central Saanich Family
Festival at the Peninsula Country Market. This has become a great PR event with all of the well-wishers that came up through the morn-ing thanking us for the great work and the support we give to our community. This event also gave us a chance to show off our newest member Corinne Marshall. We also used the opportunity to tell anyone who would listen that size does matter and we can always ac-commodate 20 to 30 more new members.

Healing into
WholenessBy Brené Brown
‘’I think midlife is when the universe gently places her hands upon your shoulders, pulls you close, and
whispers in your ear:I’m not screwing around. It’s time.
All of this pretending and performing –
these coping mechanisms that you’ve developed to protect
yourself from feeling inadequate and getting hurt – has to go.
Your armor is preventing you from growing into your gifts.
I understand that you needed these protections when you were small.
I understand that you believed your armor could help you secure all of the things you needed to feel worthy of love and belong-ing, but you’re still searching and you’re
more lost than ever.
Time is growing short.
There are unexplored adventures ahead of you. You can’t live the rest of your life worried about what other people think.
You were born worthy of love and belonging. Courage and daring are
coursing through you.
You were made to live and love with your whole heart.
It’s time to show up and be seen.’’
