Differentiated Assessment…

Immediate, in-the-moment assessments which allow the teacher to get a sense of current student status.

Self-evaluative student reflection, giving the teacher insight into perceived needs.

Brief assessments given at a stopping point in instruction, allowing the teacher to step back and revise the instructional plan.

Systematic data collection on individual skill & concept attainment.

Sharing learning goals or expectations with the students before the learning takes place.

Involving students in self-assessment.Providing feedback that helps students

recognize their next steps and how to take them.

Providing students with models or examples of what we expect from them.

Formative Assessment is carried out

Summative assessment of the plants is the process of simply measuring them. It might be interesting to compare and analyze measurements but these do not affect the growth of the plants.

Formative assessment, on the other hand, is the equivalent of feeding and watering the plants appropriate to their needs - directly affecting their growth.

Mrs. Borland asks students to complete 5 questions as a “Do Now” before her math lesson begins. Students who have all 5 correct may skip the whole class lesson and begin the class assignment.

FormativeA “Do Now” activity in the beginning of class is a great way to assess student’s understanding of a concept or skill that

you taught the day before.

All fourth grade students take a chapter test to determine their mastery level at the end of a unit.

During Mr. Green’s English class students participated in several activities around writing quality sentences by using complex sentence structures. At the end of the day students were asked to write what they learned today on index cards that were collected. Mr. Green uses these exit cards to craft the next day’s lesson.

Exit cards are a great way to assess what was learned that day by all your students and helps the teacher plan for or re-plan for the next day.

As Ms. Bosco returns the research papers on the Civil War, each student references the attached rubric indicating the final grade.

SummativeStudents are being assessed at the end of

the project based on the rubric.

Rubrics are great but should be given out in the beginning of a unit or lesson. Used as a guide or an assessment tool along the way to determine students understanding would be formative assessment.

In the middle of a lesson on fractions, Ms. Carew asked the students to share an adjective that captures their current feelings. Based on the positive responses, the teacher continued the pace of her lesson.

Formative

Ms. Carew was verbally assessing her student’s understanding and using to gauge her next lesson.
