D haulagiri A ttem pt. A nine-man Japanese expedition led by M asakatsu Nakamura attempted the normal northeast ridge of Dhaulagiri. Strong winds

and deep soft snow defeated the first summit attack on M ay 10 when Haruo M izukoshi, Seiichi Sekiya, Ang Phurba Sherpa and Kunga Sherpa got to 7955 meters from Camp V. Another summit party, moving up behind the first, did not go higher than Camp IV because a storm was approaching on May 11 that could mean a long spell of bad weather. Food and fuel were running out and so they decided to abandon the climb.
