LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA Feature Spring 2012

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA:TAKING ACTION, CHANGING ODDSCancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on those affected. The Y and LIVESTRONG® have joined together to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a research-based physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors reclaim their total health.

Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to achieve their goals, such as building muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance, and improving confidence and self-esteem. In addition to physical benefits, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond.

MOTHER’S DAY 5K CELEBRATES SURVIVORS

On Sunday, May 13, racers and walkers, along with their families and friends, gathered at Memorial Field in Berkeley Heights for the Annual Mother’s Day 5K. This year, in an effort to make the race even more special and meaningful than before, all race proceeds benefited LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.

More than 700 people participated in honor of mothers and cancer survivors alike. One special

team, Warriors in Pink, was comprised of friends and family members of Curemonos, a support group for Latina women who are breast cancer survivors.

Nearly $30,000 in funds were raised through the 5K to support LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is also funded through the generosity of the Y’s Annual Campaign donors and grant funding provided by Overlook Hospital Foundation.

PROGRAM TESTIMONIALS:“The Y gave me my life back at a time when I most needed it!”

“I was doom and gloom before I enrolled in the program. Since then I’ve bonded with my group and I am happier. I’ve tried the machines, stretching, and yoga. I’m trying to do what I can to change the odds.”
