Gaps for fantasy in children's films - Television and the aesthetic of reception

Does children's films leave "gaps" for fantasy?

NUESS

1. Specific words and sentences used in television and films invite the person to “another time and imaginary space” so imagination is required.

2. Television shows children new story and events that they never experienced before.

3. Sounds can stimulate fantasy.

4. Metaphors are used. To understand it one has to use imagination

5. TV uses symbols that need interpreting so imagination is used

the "grounded theory" approach

THE GIRLS Sayed …Television's significant role for the make-believe worlds of children should not be underestimated. It can be used to promote fantasy if children and their parents are able to contend with its contents, viewing duration and discussion of the television traces in a competent and literate way and if producers are aware of their responsibility, do not exploit children but take them and their diverse characteristics and needs seriously, and join hands in supporting their healthy growth.

THE GAP THEORY

The gap theory :parts of the story that are not told but the visual images

fill the gaps for the viewer

NUESS SAYED …

The gap theory is based on the fact that in everymovie there is a gap in time throughout the plot. These gaps allow the child to imagine. The gap theoryargues that there are parts of the story that are nottold but the visual images fill the gaps for the viewer, which is called "aesthetic of reception".

THE GIRLS SAYED…

The connections between the make-believe worlds and the media vary in intensity. They range from dream worlds that seem to stem entirely from a media experience to those that reveal no direct traces whatsoever

Both article's claims that Children view images differently than adults

. children interpret the

images differently.
