BRAINSTORMING

What do you like about those images? How do the images inform or relate to the

music?

Task: You will create a work of art that will symbolize your composition.

You will hand in the following:• Rough sketch of your idea that itemizes the materials

you will need to gather to create your artwork;• The final copy of your artwork on 8 ½ x 11” paper; and• A rationalization of your design choices based on the

principles of design discussed in the class.

YOUR TASK

Basic Design Principles A design must have:

• Balance

• Proportion

• Rhythm

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

BalanceBisymmetrical:• Draw a line through the centre, and

both sides are the same.

Asymmetrical:• Draw a line through the centre, and

both sides are different, but both sides are given the same weight or importance.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

BALANCE: BISYMMETRICAL

BALANCE: ASYMMETRICAL

Proportion: The relationship of the size of each part of the design to the other parts:

• Sizes of items should complement each other;

• No strict rules, but it should be pleasing to the eye, or out of proportion for effect.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

PROPORTION

Rhythm: the force that leads our eye from one part of the design to another and evokes an emotional response

*** This is very important for music artwork design!

• A still image can makes us feel calm or relaxed;

• A busy image can make use feel excited or anxious.

Colour:• Helps create emotional response:• Vibrant, warm colors (red and orange) = strong

emotions;• Cool colours (blue) = calm, peaceful feeling;

• Identical designs have a very different impact when published in different colours;

• Also consider the way colours work together or work against each other.

DESIGN ELEMENTS

Value: • The lightness or darkness of

colours;

• The value of a colour can change its emotional response.

Texture:• Can help influence emotional response;• Life experience tells us how things feel;• After we know, we only need to see objects

to know how they feel;• The effect of a smooth, shiny surface is quite

different from a rough, dull one – quite often, the contrast is very effective.
