Design Perspectives
Progression: STEM Fundamentals - Section 3 Curriculum Packet
IntroductionThis lesson will familiarize students with the different perspectives of a design. Students will learn the basics of dimensions, multiviews, and measurement using Rokenbok. The skills learned through this activity will be used continuously by students as they design and engineer their own inventions.
Learning Objectives
Become familiar with the dimensions of an object including length, depth, and height.
Understand what components and objects look like from different points of view.
Calculate the size of Rokenbok components using the metric measuring system.
Become comfortable in the ability to use Rokenbok to determine the dimensions of an object.
Activity Time: 60 Minutes
Educational Standards
NGSSK-5-ETS1-3 Engineering Design
ITEEASTL8- Attributes of Design
STL9- Engineering Design
MS-ETS1-4 Engineering Design
STL12- Use Technological Systems
Learning OutcomeSee Like a Designer, Think Like an Engineer: Students experience convergent and divergent STEM explorations, and learn scientific and engineering processes in applying technology. These explorations focus on intuitive concepts, like how to make things strong and how to make things move. These experiences give students confidence in their ability to learn technical skills and to use technology to create solutions of their own design.
ResourcesThe following resources will be used to complete this lesson.

Rokenbok Building BasicsThe following tips will be helpful when using the Rokenbok Student Design & Engineering System.
Building Basics
Connecting/Separating ROK Blocks:
ROK Blocks use a friction-fit, pyramid and opening system to connect. Simply press pyramids into openings to connect. To separate blocks, pull apart.
Connecting/Separating Rokenbok Components:
Smaller Rokenbok components use a tab and opening system to connect. Angle one tab into the opening, and then snap into place. To separate, insert key into the engineered slot and twist.
Snapping Across Openings:
The tabs on Rokenbok components can also be snapped across openings to provide structural support to a design. This will also allow certain designs to function correctly.
Attaching String:
In some instances, string may be needed in a design. Lay string across the opening and snap any Rokenbok component with tabs or pyramids into that opening. Be sure that the tabs are perpendicular to the string to create a tight fit.

3 OpeningsMeasuring:
The outside dimensions of each Rokenbok connector block are 2 cm3. This means the length, depth, and height are each 2 cm. To determine the size of a Rokenbok build in centimeters, simply count the number of openings and multiply by two. Repeat this process for length, depth and height.

Designing & Engineering in 3DAll objects that exist in physical space have three dimensions: length, depth, and height. Whether a given dimension of an object is classified as the length, depth, or height is determined by the perspective from which is viewed and measured.
These “dimensions” are identified as:
1. Length - How long the object is. 2. Depth - How deep the object is. 3. Height - How tall the object is.

InstructionsLocate a Green, Yellow, and Blue ROK Block to answer the following questions.
1. How many openings are there on the Length of the block? 2. How many openings are there on the Depth of the block? 3. How many openings are there on the Height of the block?
4
Understanding MultiviewsIt is important to be able to understand what objects look like from different points of view. The primary views of most objects include the front view, the side view, and the top view. These views will give the length, depth, and height of an object.

Measuring with RokenbokAll Rokenbok components are designed in metric units of measurement. This means that it easy to determine the dimensions of a object or design. Simply count the number of openings and multiply by two to determine dimensions in metric centimeters. On smaller Rokenbok components, there is a center mark in the middle of an opening that represents one centimeter.

InstructionsUse Rokenbok components to build two measuring sticks like the ones pictured below. Determine the length of each measuring stick in centimeters (cm). Then build a custom measuring stick to determine the dimensions of a desk, table, or object in the room. Make sure to measure length, depth, and height.

CleanupTo keep the ROK Blocks Module clean and organized, students should have an understanding of how to correctly pack the module once they are finished using it. Locate the ROK Blocks Inventory and Organization Guide that was included in the module. Pack the module back exactly as shown in the guide.
