How Does Google Work?

Strengths• Google “owns the field” with its remarkable

search engine technology.

• It is a common household name; instead of

telling someone to “search for information” it

is simply “Google it.”

• Google uses Adwords as an advertising

platform that places relevant text. Most

business that use Adwords need it due to its

high conversation rate, converting potential

viewers into buyers.

• Google is THE MOST visited website on the

Internet, therefore, having no shortage of

customers who are looking to advertise while

using their platform.

Opportunities

• Google Plus is one of the latest hot spots of

social networking, successfully becoming the

go-to place for just about anything on the

Internet available,

• Google offers Latitude, which is a GPS app,

that gives a real-time feed of where your

mobile device has been (given if you have the

app activated).

• iMobi is a small company that has quickly

built up as one of the leaders in developing

mobile advertising.

Threats

•Lawsuits are one of Google’s major threats. In 2010, they spend close to $2 billion on related legal services/violations. The outcome of those lawsuits are typically paid to the lawyers involved, along with the ones that sued them in the first place.

•They’re in constant competition in the social networking, and application business by the biggest names in technology: Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and Oracle.

Weaknesses

• On a global scale, there are some countries that cannot access Google (like China or North Korea due to censorship on the servers in their countries).

• Google survives only on advertisements, though it may seem unlikely of the situation. But like the newspaper industry, it may disappear due to the constant change of technology, causing revenue to drop.

AOL: The Evil Rival of Google In the early 1980s, Stephen Case

took a job at a company called

Control Video, which provided online

services for user of Atari computer

games. When the company ran into

trouble, he helped the new CEO,

Jim Kimsey, raise funds for the dying

company.

The company was soon reborn in

1985 under the new name Quantum

Computer Services, which launched

the new nationwide service America

Online.

What helped set this competitor ahead (at the time) was the services they provided, such as MapQuest, AIM (Instant Messaging), and using AOL Advertising and subscription sales.

They also sell ads on third-party sites. Sadly, their search services are provided through a deal with none other than Google.

Strangely, AOL still offers their dial-up Internet access services for a monthly fee to close to 4 million users in the US (the poor saps).
