Design and all forms of graphic media carry with them intellectual brilliance and cultural meaning. The blindingly obvious is often missed because of familiarity. The mere invisibility of, say, great typography prevents us noticing it - it simply works - or the ways corporate marks, graphics and information are communicated and committed to memory, evidence the ways decisions, personal identities and personal choices are subtly manipulated by ‘reading’ graphic marks and making clear their associations, incorporating them into our behaviour. Advertising, art and identity are co-related and we respond to the nuances of each.

These young graduates are some of UELs best students - articulate, visually articulate and leaving university to practice in a world where their authority and creative skill has the potential for positive, or negative outcomes.

The responsibility of all informed visual practitioners has truth, elements of entertainment, ethical considerations and logic at its heart. It is no longer, at this level, in these areas of study, merely commercial decoration or about surface finish. All the students from Digital Arts and Visual Communication take their skills and their mutual experience here and apply it first in their work that you see in this exhibtion; it is here they have experienced group working, knowing and showing their work together and discussing potential influences upon their work. Now they can take this approach and make it tangible outside.

It’s this potential we see, but it is the friendships and the personal experience of the student that is to be celebrated here in the bright morning of their future careers.

James Murray’s work focuses on relating to people and talking to them through different characterisations.

His animations allow him to create his own characters, by giving them a face, a background and a believability that mimics real life. His core medium is Stop-motion using clay, as this combines his love of sculpting with the freedom of photography.

James uses his graphic design to relate to people by drawing on their own experiences and interests. He is mainly influenced through the people he meets and how they live their lives. James’ fascination with people is leading him to Africa in September, where he intends to start his next big project.

Currently I am drawing together an interest in light, space and surface entwined with notions of exploring intimacy and vastness. My research into the “poetic image” evokes fond memories of aesthetic reverie and suggests isotonic relief in which they possess. I attempt to use my drawings to motivate an interest of visual language that plays with metaphor within the welfare of the individual, social and cultural situation in a diverse way.

I love cinematography and strive to react with this in mind throughout my work. With practice I am often at my best when I am playful – as long as I am filled up with provocative ideas! The results tend to enable themselves to last the process of creative evolution. The camera usually is a tool for reference for me, but also provides extended drawing potential. Drawing, painting, print, animating and the potential of narrative are key to my current project materials and presentational ambitions.

The fixation behind my work is always to re-present a traditional idea and with my recent work I want to force my audience to look at portraiture from a different angle. This was inspired by Michael Collings’ thoughts on surprise – Jolting you out of the old way of seeing, so you see something new. Re-see the known, so it can be seen differently. As portraiture is a form of preserving and documenting, I wanted to create a unique form of self-portraiture highlighting the indexical and symbolic.

Throughout this year I have been making a series of investigational pieces that represent my interest of physical traces, marks and forms made by our bodies that usually go unnoticed as a form of graphic portraiture, bringing these daily occurring imprints (e.g. like the indentations on a bed) to the attention of the audience. Through my practice I have been exploring how to re-create these marks through photography and sculpture, so unlike the disappearing impression we make on a daily basis this work signifies the idea of freezing time, survival and rising forms.

Jackie’s Eco-friendly take on the world brings you the beauty of nature and trees, but also alerts you of tragic events of certain issues that are easily overlooked.

In her previous projects she has looked into using Eco-friendly ways to portray her beautifully delicate images, Her current project is about pollution and the current effect on Forests and Trees, by using imagery of mini landscapes of healthy trees in less polluted areas.

‘Lower Lea Exposures’ is a series of images of the Lee Canal, in East London’s Lower Lea Valley. The body of work explores the relationship between the industrial and the natural.

The double exposures result in a somewhat fragmented yet dreamy layering of the locations that mirror the chaotic nature of the canal. Central to the work is the underlying tension between new construction work, historical buildings, industrial yards and green spaces along the canal.

Born in 1989, in Lisbon, Portugal. I’m an Illustrator and Graphic Designer. To me drawing is both a hobby and passion. Having learnt a multitude of different styles, I believe in the importance of using techniques appropriate to the job at hand. Starting in 2007, I studied Communication Design in the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, before studying Illustration and Design as a part of the Erasmus program at the University of East London, 2009/10.

‘The Forgotten Ones’ is a series of photographs that focuses on the elderly generation of our modern world and how we as a society might or might not see them. Are the elderly invisible to us?

This body of work is attempting to photographically reflect the presence that I feel the elderly possess today. As the average life expectancy continues to rise and the elderly population grows, the question of how we care for the elderly becomes more prominent. It is inevitable that one day we too will grow old and at some point we may find ourselves old and alone. Would you like to be the forgotten one?

In the series of ‘Untitled’ film stills the main focus is location. Places of isolation, of pleasure and ways of wondering. Exploring living in a day and age that is geared around technology, status, living alone and fickle ties and bonds, people appear as if they live to work, work to survive and survive to relax, causing strain within people. Therefore, resorting to isolation in order to appear invisible and retreat into their own world. I want the viewer to look at the juxtaposed images, observe and respond to them in their own way. There is no forced correlation within the images that has to be uncovered. I felt it was crucial for the individual to take from these images what they feel when looking at them, with their own ideas of isolation, city life, retreat and restraint in mind.

I enjoy using mixed media and collage,cutting up magazines and images and creating new compositions. When drawing characters I use a black line and detail to show emotion and personality. My main inspirations are David Shrigley, Gustav Klimt, Liselotte Watkins and Lovisa Burfitt. I am also influenced by fashion, film and music; especially anything from the 1980’s.

I am currently applying for work experience positions at Theatres, as I have a keen interest in prop, set and production design and continuing my freelance Illustration work for local clubs, bands and magazines.

Born and raised in Italy, Annalisa developed her deep passion for photography whilst studying Cinema at ‘La Sapienza University’ in Rome.In 2005, after her graduation, she moved to London, United Kingdom.
