C ruise the Coop II presented by

Drip’n Drivers is the second annual v-dub

car show held in Dallas, GA. It was the first

time we attended this show. March is usual-

ly a nice time for a show in Georgia, this

time it was a bit chilly with the occasional

snow flurries. But this did not deter the

many people who attended the show. We al-

so have to thank Chicken World for keeping

us warm with their hot food and hot choco-

late.

One of the things that stood out and made

this a must to attend was all air and water-

cooled dubs were welcomed. Along with

free vending to new and used parts/toy

venders. Spectators were free, raffle prizes,

50/50 cash drawing, stack your rack award,

and top ten awards for various classes.

Between all the great cars and people we

were entertained all day. I even managed to pick up an oar for the roof rack of Ben R.’s ’66 and purchased a cool beer tap handle for

my ’67. We hope to be able to attend this show for years to come. So if you missed

out on this year’s show make sure you check out Drip’n Drivers on Georgia Dubs for all their latest info and upcoming events.

See you there next year!

ack in march we were down in Orlando Florida covering a few feature dubs for an upcoming issue. One of the features was behind on putting in new door panels and was short

some grommets. So we took a ride to this cool parts store to pick some up. The first thing you notice when pulling up is half a green bug up against the wall and a couple of wa-

ter cooled caddies along with a bay window in the lot. Once inside you find yourself surrounded by all types of air cooled goodies. I myself picked up an Empi GTV logo along

with a parts catalog and was also given some stickers. The staff was very knowledgeable and you could tell had a great passion for what they do.

After we finished our business I asked if they would mind if I got a couple of

shots of their vehicles. Of course they said yes and I was able to snap a few

cool shots. Pablo Cruz’s roof rack on his ‘81 caddy caught my eye immediately.

I loved the vw cut out logo on both sides of the rack. You usually don’t see to

many good looking roof racks for these pickups but this one was done right.

Lowered on Borbet type a’s gave it a great looking stance. I personally love the

square head lights on these caddies, they are becoming more and more rare

due to the fact no one makes a square light core support. But Pablo said he is

looking to swap it out for the euro single light set up which is still a sweet look.

From my understanding not much had been done engine wise yet, but there

are plans in the near future.

The second caddy that caught my eye was on the left side of the lot sitting in the shade of a huge tree. This 1982 Rabbit

pickup belongs to another Triangle employee, Mr. Austin. (I actually caught back up with him at the No Dough show in

Port Orange, FL) Where I was able to get a better handle on his truck. The rusty fender and patina paint gave this pickup

so much character. Not much has been done to this one besides being lowered (flipped rear), smoked signals, cookie

cutter wheels, complete 1.8 DOHC swap, and new wire harness. And as everyone knows finding a bed that hasn

beaten from the loads over the years giving it that wave effect is almost impossible, but not this one. The bed, tailgate,

and body were all in such great shape. These guys are always looking for something new to work on and we hope to

catch up with these two in upcoming shows to see what’s new. Thanks again to the guys at Triangle Auto!

First step in changing your oil on your

dub is to make sure you purchase oil

(haha) and your oil change kit (air-

cooled). If your car is low you may need

to jack it up. Park car on flat surface

place chock in front of front tire. Jack the

rear up and place on jack stands. Once

vehicle is secure you can start on your oil

change.

Locate the drain plug on the sump plate

(73 and on may not have). Place your oil

catch pan underneath to catch your old

oil.

Opening your oil cap usually makes the

oil flow faster. This step is not necessary.

I like to do it!

Issue 1 | Www.DasDubbn.com 45

Next locate your 13/16 socket and get under

car and remove oil drain plug. Set plug aside

to be cleaned.

Let the oil drain into the catch pan. While the

oil is draining go ahead get your 10mm sock-

et to remove the nuts on the sump plate.

Once oil has slowed you can remove all the

nuts around sump plate. And remove plate

and old gasket.

After that you can remove the screen and

gasket as well. You may need to pry out

screen to remove it. Just be careful not to ru-

in screen if your planning on reusing it.

Issue 1 | Www.DasDubbn.com 46

With the sump plate and screen removed

clean them of all and any debris and oil.

Throttle body cleaner works great to clean

the screen and plate. If using a new screen

you can skip cleaning the old one.

Wipe down plate with a rag to get all that

grime off.

Now grab your oil change gaskets.

Put one on the inside of your new or

cleaned screen, line up the holes and in-

stall. Once that’s in put the next gasket on

the inside of the sump plate and using the

new washers replace nuts (do not over

tighten 5lbs of torque should suffice). In-

stall your drain plug next and remove catch

pan from bottom of car. You can now lower

your back to the ground. Lastly add your

new oil to oil filler in engine bay. 2.5

quarts at first, wait a few minutes, check

your dip stick and if more is needed add to

fill line. If you have an oil bath cleaner

drain that oil as well and add fresh oil.

Don’t forget to check your valves!

T alk about a clean ‘72, this one has been done right. We first met Tom Erhart at the No Dough Bus show in Port Orange, FL.

As I started to shoot a few photos of his beetle he started to give me the inside scoop on his car. First off Tom aka Tom Cat
