PullUniversal Bathroom Storage

Four week, Four member group projectResponsible for research, sketch models, computer models

Design bathroom storage offering solutions for healthy living, well being and aging in place.

Problem

Several Types of Storage

EXISTING PRODUCTS

We looked at several existing models such as over toilet storage, vanity, in mirror and below sink. After that, we listed the pros, cons and opportunities of each type.

We organized the wide range of existing bathroom storage into groups based on various items being stored and function within bathroom

Grouping

TARGET USERMeet the Smiths

The Smiths are not your normal family. Two members of this family have a disability. These disabilities do not allow for the bathroom storage to be fully utilized by everyone in the family. The only user that has full access to the bathroom storage is mom, Katie. Everyone else in the family is either too short or because of disability unable to take full advantage of storage.

USER OBSERVATIONUnseen Problems

We met a wheelchair user and observed him in the bathroom. We saw that he had problems accessing his bathroom storage.

DESIGNER OBSERVATIONEmpathic Modeling

We had our designer try out the wheelchair herself, and she had the same issues. Her issues were also made worse because she is a petite woman.

INITIAL SKETCHESFirst Round of Ideas

We sketched out different ideas for storing several things in the bathroom. This ideation eventually led to our two main ideas.

MORE SKETCHINGTwo Ideas - Moving Sink, Moving Cabinet

Of our two ideas, we felt like both of them could really enhance our target users lifestyle and make their days easier.

SKETCH MODELSTwo Models

Class Review

After a group review showing our sketches and our sketch models, we decided to proceed with the Pull cabinet bathroom storage.

REFINED SKETCHForm Study

We explored shapes of the cabinet by sketching them out. We drew multiple shapes and diffent styles but simplistic fit the best for our users.

Problem

In today’s world, we carry a lot of important items in our wallets. While traveling, it is almost

impossible to replace these items. Preventing them from being stolen is imperative.

TARGET USERPICKPOCKETING HAPPENSKnow How it Happens

You are distracted by a group of people arguing and your wallet gets taken

People pretend to be intoxicated and bump into you and take your wallet

Attractive women come and distract you and take your wallet

TARGET USERBen The Traveler

Ben a, 29 year old, works for a large publicly traded company. As a part of Ben’s job he is required to do a lot of international travel. During his travel he does not have a lot of time for sightseeing and is always rushing between client meetings. Ben travels light for these trips. Since he is always in a rush, he is very susceptible to being pick pocketed.

DESIGN CRITERIAWhat The Solution Needs

Step 1: Attach to belt

Step 2: Can not be removed from belt

Step 3: Alert when pulled too far

Storyboard

You are stranded in a different country withno money for identification for transportation

While you are busy talking on the phone hesneeks up and steals your wallet.

You are on the phone and a thief finds you as an easy target for pickpocketing.

You are traveling to a different country. All you bring is your suitcase full of clothes, and your wallet which contains your indentification, money, credit cards etc.

STORY BOARDHow The Problem Happens

DESIGN CRITERIA

REFINED SKETCHINGFORM STUDYLooking at Different Shapes

I sketched out forms that had a simple shape but still gave the sense of strength. This sense of strength is seen in the visual weight of the shape

REFINED SKETCHINGFinding The Final Form

I chose the one that was simple yet strong. I also started to look at ways to clip on the belt. I chose the flat shape one because it laid better on the belt.

How It Works

SeCure attaches to the belt with a plastic loop and to the wallet with an elastic strap. If the wallet is pulled too far away from the belt clip - the alarm will sound alerting the user and drawing attention to the pickpocketer.

6 Week Team ProjectTeam of two designers and one engineer

Responsible for CAD, foam model, 3D printing, computer renderings

The current way to get soap on dishes is slow, often breaks, and needs to be refilled and replaced.

FIRST SKETCHESLooking at Sinks

We started looking at sinks online and narrowed it down to three types of sinks. We saw hard geometric, harsh angles, and arc neck type.

REFINED SKETCHESPicking the Features

We looked at two simple features, a button to change the stream and a button to dispense soap. These features are simple just like how we want our product to look.

After being unable to find a shape within CAD we had to step back and find new design inspirations. We took the swan’s neck and the weight of a vase as our design criteria.

We made a CAD model based on our model and 3d printed it. After 3d printing and a design review, we saw that the bottom of the model was too heavy.
