DALI – local lighting intelligence
Many conference rooms and offices still have a be-wildering array of switches for operating the differentgroups of lights. This is often a problem for users ofthese rooms as they find it difficult to figure out quicklyenough what all the different switches, buttons and rotary potentiometers do – even if they are labelled. As a result, most of the functions of the lighting system, installed at great cost to provide high levels of comfort and flexibility, are not used at all.
New digital lighting control systems withDALI technology are as flexible as they are simple. With just a few low-cost compo-nents, DALI offers intelligent room-basedlighting management with high functio-nality, low wiring costs and user-friendly operation.
Flexible grouping – without rewiring
DALI is designed for scene-based lighting control systems. A scene or lighting status of a room is defined by adjusting the different groups in the room.A group is a meaningful collection of luminaires. In offices, these groups are mostly rows of lights. Diffe-rent lighting moods (scenes) can be created by settingdifferent lighting levels for these groups (on, off ordimmed). These scenes can be easily saved and calledup at any time at the touch of a button. They can alsobe adjusted at any time.
Up to now, groups have been set up by wiring the circuits appropriately. Planners and installers had to decide right at the start which luminaires were to be combined into groups. With DALI this restriction is a thing of the past.
The luminaires and their associated ECGscan be freely assigned to groups, irrespective of their physical arrangement in rows either down or across. The groups, like the scenes, are simply stored in the DALI ECG.

More comfort. Less components
Clever scene changes: With DALI the complete lightingsystem goes to the new setting in synchronism. All thelamps are dimmed or brought back up simultaneouslyand all reach the new setting at the same time, what-ever the difference in brightness between the two settings. This function is performed automatically by the DALI ECGs.
For users, DALI means there are far fewer controls to worry about. Four scenes are enough for most
conference rooms, plusa central switch forswitching the lightingsystem off and for acting as an overridedimmer. The right lighting levels can beachieved in a matter of seconds. It's best to provide labels for the various scenes.
DALI combines the convenience of a bus system with ease of installation and use.
Simple installation. Stunning versatility
DALI is installed using standard installation material for mains voltage (e.g. 5x1.5 mm2 NYM, as for 1-10V).“Clever” features simplify installation still further. For example, there is no need to define the groups atthe planning stage, no need to worry about the polarityof the control cable and no switching relays since theECGs switch itself on and off.
With DALI the entire system can be addressed, as wellas individual units as groups. 64 individual addressescan be assigned, 16 groups and 16 scenes can bestored in the ECGs. DALI can be easily integrated intoa building management system via gateways. Thesegateways are already available on the market.
In this solution, DALI is an intelligent sub-system for light. DALI also enables feedback(such as lamp faults) to be sent to the buil-ding management system.
Far-reaching applications.Long-term satisfied customers
Digital lighting control systems with DALI interfaces are ideal not only for offices and conference rooms.Public buildings such as sports halls, classrooms, restaurants and shops are another major area of potential use. DALI is even of interest for car show-rooms and for decorative lighting. These applicationsoften call for different lighting scenes – for selling, forpresenting certain products and for night-time lighting.
Integration of sensors for light and movement in systems with DALI technology rounds off the intelligentlighting control system perfectly.
With DALI, the new international standardfor digital lighting control, successfullighting is pre-programmed. For you andyour customers. Simple. And lasting.

DALI is supported by most of the lighting industry asthe new digital standard in lighting control. DALI is a joint development, designed to meet all the require-ments placed on a modern lighting control system. The aim was to create a uniform non-proprietary standard in the lighting industry.
DALI does not define a lighting system.Instead it defines the digital communicationbetween a control unit and the electroniccontrol gear.
DALI is therefore included in control gear standard EN 60929 as Annex E4. The uniform interface definition specifies the function of a DALI control unitor a DALI-compliant load in a lighting system and guarantees the interchangeability of equipment fromdifferent manufacturers.
Features of DALI
Floating voltage control input
Two-wire line, polarity-free
Dimming curve analogous to the behaviour of the eye (linear optical sensitivity)
Addressing options: all together, by group, individual
Scene memory in the DALI ECG (maximum of 16)
Individual feedback messages (e.g. lamp fault)
Digital on/off switching in the ECG (without switching relays)
Advantages of using DALI
No need to worry about the mains voltage phase
No need to worry about polarity
No separate bus line
No wiring by groups
Each DALI ECG can be addressed individually
No need for scene memory modules
Status messages from DALI ECGs (e.g. lamp faults)
Synchronised scene transitions
No external relay, DALI ECGs switch themselves on and off
