On Holy Saturday, the Church affirms that Jesus was dead. His body, lifeless. Inert. I find strangeconsolationinJesus’experienceoftheterrifyingrealityofdeath.OnthisHolySaturday, deathleavesussilent; our only task is to be still. In the stillness of his grief,WolterstorffwrestledwithGod and themeaningofsuffering, andwrote:

“God is Love. That iswhy [God] suffers. To loveour suffering sinfulworld is to suffer.GodsosufferedfortheworldthathegaveuphisonlySontosuffering.TheonewhodoesnotseeGod’ssufferingdoesnotseehislove.Godissufferinglove.

Butmysteryremains.Whyisn’tLove-without-sufferingthemeaningofthings?Whyissuffering-Lovethemeaning?WhydoesGodendurehissuffering?Whydoeshenotatoncerelievehisagonybyrelievingours?”(p.90)
