1.0 INTRODUCTION La Bataille de Bautzen 1813 covers the main battle on May 21st 1813. It is difficult to model the first day of the battle without doubling the battle area. The first day saw a steady retreat of the Coalition forces to their prepared positions behind the Spree, so the main battle scenario covers the more important second day. The battles of Weissig and Königswartha were fought on May 19th, 1813 are played on a single map and make good introductions. Following the battle the Coalition retreated and Napoleons pursuit continued hampered by the quality and quantity of his cavalry. Duroc was killed by the Russians during a battle between Reynier’s VII Corps supported by Napoleon and the Garde Cavalrie and Prince Eugene at Reichenback on the 22nd and the V Corps had a division decimated at Haynau on the 26th May by the Prussians rearguard.
2.0 RULES QUESTIONS Check the La Bataille forum at Consimworld: http://www.consimworld.com.
3.0 GAME COMPONENTS A complete game of La Bataille de Bautzen includes the following components, most of which have to be obtained from the game © Marshal Enterprise 2019.
1. Seven 34” x 22” maps 2. A lot of counters 3. One Exclusive Rules Books 4. Charts and tables 5. Four organizational displays 6. Game Turn Record Track 7. Terrain Effects Chart
4.0 TERRAIN
4.1 Towns Bautzen. All other hexes which contain buildings are considered Villages. Any single building by itself is considered a Hamlet
4.2 Spree Bridges & Fords Spree -Units may not melee across the Spree except at bridges and fords. Only one battalion; or one regiment of cavalry may assault across a Spree Bridge or ford hex side at any point in time. Cavalry may only be in Road March when crossing a bridge hex side. Cavalry may not charge through a bridge or ford hexside. All cavalry formations that move through a bridge or ford hexside, add six to their printed morale until their next morale recovery segment; in addition to any other modifiers. This represents regrouping after the crossing.
4.3 Woods Pathway Infantry and cavalry may move from one pathway hex to another using the movement chart. Units on the pathway are in General Order or Skirmish. Woods pathway hexes act as woods except for facilitating faster movement.
4.4 Swamps Only infantry formations in Tirailleur (skirmish) order may enter swamp hexes. Units may not melee out of the swamp. Melee values attacking into or defending in the swamp are x.25 of printed. Units may not advance into the swamp as a result of combat. Units forced to retreat into a swamp are eliminated
4.5 Eichberg (Weissig) This is a height that commands a view of the surrounding area and is designated on the map. No other terrain or units block line of site from this location.
4.6 Earthwork The Earthworks have 4 front hexsides and 2 rear. Fire defence of the Earthworks through the front hexside is fourteen and through the rear is six. Units may move to enter the Earthworks only from the rear hexsides as it is treated as a clear terrain hex move. Note: a melee result is the only way to enter an earthwork through the front hexsides. A single infantry battalion may enter through the rear of the Earthwork either defensively to stack with and support the batterie or single battalion may assault the earthwork to capture it. The batterie may only fire through the front four hexsides of the Earthwork. Melee through a front hexside is minus 12 to the attacker’s morale check and any assaulting infantry is halved in melee factors. The unit in the earthwork does not have to check morale if attacked through the front hexsides. Assaulting through the rear hexside is treated like clear terrain. Once set-up guns may be repositioned within the Earthwork hex. They would be rotated to face any of the front hexsides and could fire in the turn they repositioned. Cavalry may charge or melee only through the rear hexside. However, cavalry may not enter the Earthwork as a result. The defending units would suffer any result.
La Bataille de Bautzen
4.7 Entrenchments These are felled trees, enhanced natural obstacles and actual trenches, constructed to assist the infantry’s defence. Entrenchment counters are placed at the discretion of the Coalition player on either Gorschakov’s or Miloradovich’s front. The entrenchments would be placed in between or around Earthworks in a clear terrain hex. Russian infantry / jaegers may be in any formation except Column, Carre or Road March in an entrenchment Cavalry may not charge into or through this terrain The unit in an Entrenchment does not have a defensive pre-melee morale check. The attacker does not get an advantage in their pre-melee
morale check because of odds. Once the French move into an Entrenchment hex, the Coalition has one turn to occupy the hex or the Entrenchment counter is removed for
the remainder of the game. There is no pre-melee improvement for Grenadier or Guard Infantry in this terrain. They would be in general order for fire defence and
offensive fire in the hex Artillery or cavalry may not occupy this hex. If forced to retreat into the hex, the cavalry would immediately rout and the artillery be
eliminated. French infantry may only melee into an Entrenchment hex with a single battalion attacking from each adjacent hex. Entrenchments have no front, flank or rear. Any unit in this hex has only front facing
4.8 Carp Pond / Karpfen Teich These areas are a series of deep and muddy ponds. They are commercial fisheries. Entering the Carp Ponds is prohibited. Units retreating or PGD into a Karpfen Teich are eliminated.
4.9 Schießscharte Positions These positions are special village hexes that has been improved over several days with firing holes established in stone fences and buildings walls. They act as defensive strong points. Schießscharte position hexes are treated as villages and the units inside would be in General Order or skirmish but with no rear hex The fire value of a unit in a Schießscharte hex is 2x the printed value on the counter (general order) or its skirmish fire value No artillery or cavalry is allowed in the hex Cavalry may not charge or melee into this hex Coalition units in the Schießscharte hex do not perform a defensive, pre-melee morale check
4.10 Windmill A windmill is placed on the map for historical reference and is a victory condition objective. The structure has no special defence. The Russians placed earthworks on the height to protect Gleina.
4.11 Spree River The Spree River may not seem so formidable because it is somewhat. However, it did have steep banks with a marshy bed and grounds on either side with clayey soils. Notice all of the surrounding lakes. Any type of support transport; ammo caisson; officer’s horses; or other horse conveyances would have difficulty crossing from one side to the other. Thus bridges and fords are important in allowing all of a unit to cross, intact. French units often waited until a trestle was completed or burnt bridge was repaired before making an offensive move that involved crossing the Spree. They did send a few skirmishers forward. Infantry and cavalry that are forced to retreat across the Spree are routed and must roll one die. An odd roll and the unit loses one increment. An even roll and the unit loses two increments. Artillery forced to retreat across the Spree are eliminated.
4.12 Units forced off of the map All units forced off the map by combat must wait for two turns before re-entering. To re-enter they may not be PGD. Therefore it may be necessary for PGD units to wait off the board until they are successful with their morale roll. They would re-enter within three hexes of their off map exit if the leader of the division or corps is sitting on the selected entry hex. In other words, the leader must accompany them back onto the map. Use a box to designate the location and so the units don’t get misplaced.
4.13 Garden This is a vegetable garden and therefore it does not block the line of site. The corn is not as high as an elephant’s eye.
4.14 Roads and Fords Any road that crosses a stream or river is considered a ford.
4.15 General Order The following terrain requires formed units to enter General Order when entering:
Hamlets / Villages / Towns Woods hexes Garden hexes Special Structures (Schießscharte)
4.16 Depots 4.16.1 French: Western Map edge. 4.16.2 Coalition: Eastern Map Edge, then Waditz.
4.17 Terrain and Artillery Ricochet Artillery fire which targets the following hexes terminates in them. Ricochet fire may bounce into, but not through the following hexes.
Hamlets / Villages / Towns Woods hexes Garden hexes Swamp hexes
La Bataille de Bautzen
Pond hexes Special Structures (Schießscharte) Spree River
NOTE: Artillery Ricochet only applies to the Règlements de l’An XXX. 4.17.1 Slopes and Artillery Ricochet: Artillery Ricochet terminates where it meets an upslope or Banked Stream Hexside. Where Artillery Ricochet meets a down slope hexside, the slopes creates a one hex shadow over which the shot will pass with no effect before continuing along the shot path.
5.0 COMMAND The Organization and Display Charts reveal the command structure of the armies. Refer to them as necessary.
5.1 Cavalry Brigade Leaders In the case of brigades, the cavalry brigade leaders are In Command if they are within 6 hexes of their Divisional leader. Light cavalry may roll for initiative to form their own CP.
5.2 French 5.2.1 Command Points: The French receive one Command Point for Napoléon, Soult, Ney(III), Bertrand(IV), Lauriston(V), Marmont(VI), Reynier(VII), Macdonald(XI), Oudinot(XII) for a total of 9 Command Points. 5.2.2 MU Size: The largest MU which the French may create is a Corps. 5.2.3 Any cavalry allocated as Napoleon’s Headquarters Escorts may only move during the Leader Chit when he is allowed to move. 5.2.4 Leader Casualties: The following leaders may not be replaced: Napoléon, Soult, Ney, Bertrand, Lauriston, Marmont, Reynier, Macdonald, Oudinot 5.2.5 Leaders of Special Ability:

6.0 SPECIAL RULES
6.1 Headquarters Escorts Units assigned to the French headquarters escort duty may only be commanded by Napoleon or his ADCs (where they form a separate Brigade).
6.2 Scenario Reinforcements When reinforcements are directed to be deployed during the Reinforcement Chit the arriving reinforcements may not be placed in an enemy Zone of Influence. If the reinforcements are unable to comply with this rule displace them towards the friendly depot until they can be placed on the map and outside of enemy Zones of Influence.
6.2.1 French Units Entering the Map French units entering the map for the first time may use Road March if there are no enemy cavalry within 10 hexes.
6.3 Cavalry Skirmish Order Even though there is a row for cavalry skirmishers on the Fire Defence Chart and a column on the Movement Chart, this applies only to players using the Règlements de l’An XXX.
6.4 Special Unit Types and Formations Each of the national armies fighting in this campaign has a unique quality and tactical doctrine which is revealed in the rules and will necessarily change the perspective and play of the contestants.
6.4.1 Elite Infantry Troops A well trained and experienced infantry formation was able to refrain from firing until the command was given at close range. The discipline of elite troops and their ability to hold fire to the critical moment of an assault, despite losses, made them the ultimate reserve. Elite infantry troops are defined as those with printed morale, without modification, of 11 through 16. When an elite unit fires defensively against any attacking hex and the attacker suffers a loss, the pre-melee morale check of all units participating in that attack, are impacted. The effect is that all the attacking units, in this case, suffer a negative adjustment to the pre-melee morale check. The exact adjustment depends based on the morale of the defending unit with the lower the defender’s morale number, the higher the negative adjustment. A 15 or 16 morale is
La Bataille de Bautzen
minus 6; a 13 or 14 minus 9: an 11 or 12 is a minus 12. These minus values are applied as modifiers to the attacker’s morale for each increment the attacker lost due to the Defensive Fire Attack. When an elite unit attacks, the opposite is true. If the attacker inflicts a loss the pre-melee morale check of all the defending units are impacted utilizing the relationship identified above. The attacking units must, however, have stacking points in a relationship of at least 1 to 1 of the defender. If an elite unit is the attacker against an elite unit, this rule does not apply. In the event of an elite vs. an elite, the attacker has the standard modifier of minus 3 for each fire increment loss.
6.4.2 Cavalry Recovery of Readiness Cavalry may not recover a level of readiness if it is in an enemy zone of influence or is under fire as a target of an offensive or defensive attack (feu).
6.4.3 Combining Coalition Forces Prussian and Russian troops may not stack together in the same hex. If, as a result of movement (end of turn); combat, or morale recovery they are stacked; displace the affected unit(s) 2 hexes to the rear. Thus a nationality would remain and the others would be displaced. The unit(s) displaced may not move in your next turn. Prussian leaders have no effect on Russian troops. Russian leaders have no effect on Prussian Troops.
6.4.4 Artillery Leaders of Special Ability Adjacent batteries may fire upon the same target hex only if there is a leader in one of the firing hexes, and the leader has an artillery bonus. If three hexes of artillery are to fire at the same target, then a leader of special ability must be present and adjacent to all three firing hexes. Artillery in different hexes may, however, always combine their fire if the target hex is adjacent to them both. All batteries which wish to limber must roll one die to do so. Leaders with an artillery bonus number add one to this roll. French Maréchal, Ostermann-Tolstoi (R), Gorschakov (R), Langeron (R), Miloradovitch (R) & Gneisenau (P) add two to the limber roll. Artillery Leaders of special ability add three: Napoleon, Devaux, Drouot, Lauriston, Jachwill (R) & Marmont.
6.4.5 Rheinbund Infantry The infantry of Hesse; Baden; and Wurttemberg are still rooted in the linear tactics of warfare. Therefore when in line, subtract 2 from their morale value. In response to an enemy charge, they can only form Carre if already in line. Bavarian, Italien, Croatian & Wurzburg troops have the flexibility of the French for all formations and changes. If any of these troops fail to recover their morale, they lose an increment for each attempt during morale recovery.
6.4.6 Russian / Prussian Regiments Many Russian Regiments have only one battalion and therefore do not have a regimental counter. Regiments are not part of the Prussian field organization; rather operating in brigades and battalions.
6.5 Reaction and Opportunity Charges (Revises Premier Rules for this battle) This situation typically occurs when the reacting / opportunity charging cavalry contacts the phasing player’s unit. The phasing player then moves addition units into the friendly, contacted hex or adjacent hexes to add fire or melee factors. The insufficiently trained French infantry was not accustomed to advancing on and changing formation in the face of charging cavalry. Thus any French infantry or artillery unit that reinforces a meeting that is the result of an opportunity or reaction charge, in the reacting or opportunity’s Zd’I, must check morale, at the conclusion of movement. If any fail, they would rout (PGD). This infantry or artillery may not change formation in the Zd’I of the reacting or opportunity charging cavalry. The (defending) charging cavalry is not subject to recall as a result of the rout.
6.6 Morale Levels Consult the Morale Levels Summary contained in this electronic booklet as a pdf. The chart sets a threshold, at the hour, to check the condition of the organization based on the number of battalions PGD or eliminated. Cavalry and Artillery don’t count against this total and are not affected.
6.7 Russian Cossaques The Russian Cossaque Regiments that are present in the game, in certain scenarios, are irregular cavalry. Based upon that premise, please apply the following series of adjustments to their use and interaction with other units within the structure of the game: The Cossaques will check morale whenever an infantry formation which is not disordered or an artillery unit fires at the Cossaque, unless
the Cossaque is in the woods. It does not require the result of a casualty to force the morale check. The Cossaque in the woods would have to receive a casualty in order to check for morale. This is because the woods are much denser in
this area. The Cossaques may not charge formed infantry or unlimbered artillery into a front hexside of the enemy. The most reasonable uses of the Cossaques are to work the edges of the battle and target disordered and routed elements as the morale
challenged involuntarily move away from the main battle. Cossaques will also charge artillerie and infanterie from the rear or flank hexside.
6.8 Other Notable Troops Italien is represented by the Italien Infantrie; Velites Turin & Velites Florence; the Neapolitan troops and special cavalry regiments. There are no Prussian Landwehr at this battle. These patriots will arrive after the armistice. (See La Bataille de Leipzig 1813) Silesian Schützen and other Prussian Jägers are volunteer troops that provided their own rifles, casting their own rifle or musket balls and
are accurate marksman. Many were foresters from estates and wore dark green and black uniforms. Experts at concealment and tracking, they were the snipers of their day.
The French infanterie was a mixed composition of trained veterans; National Guard Cohorts and 60-day conscript (Provisoire) soldiers. The fire, melee, morale and Carre tables reflect this.
La Bataille de Bautzen
The Provisoire infanterie is defined by any infanterie unit having a striped bottom on its counter. Provisoire légère infantry is defined as légère infantry that does not have a dark blue bottom to the counter. Provisoire ligne and légère may not form line. They may not form Carre during an enemy charge
Cohort infanterie were National Guard formations raised in 1812 throughout France from both National Guard troops and Police forces. They may not form Carre during an enemy charge.
Marin infanterie is made up of sailors and coastal artillerists. Those troops were well trained and conducted themselves at a high level. The French Guard has a spectrum of experience and ability

La Bataille de Bautzen
9.0 Scenario One – The Grand Battle at Bautzen May 21, 1813
9.1 Introduction As the morning of May 21, 1813 broke forth, there were significant battles on either wings of both armies. As those early morning battles started to subside, then the battles in the centre started to develop. To assist Marshal Oudinot on the right of the French line, Marshal MacDonald assaulted and taken Rabitz. He was able to an artillery grand battery close to the Russian lines and relieve the pressure coming from the Russian grenadiers and other troops. This newly found pressure on the Russian centre allowed Oudinot some respite from the pounding he was getting from the Russian offensive. Ney was finally starting to move forward from Gleina on the French left; but he stalled again at Preititz, where Souham’s massive division had been manhandled by Barclay de Tolly. Ney felt compelled to use three other divisions (Delmas; Albert and Rickard) to assault the town. By that time, the Prussians, under Kleist, were assisting the Russians, and Preititz switched hands several times in a three hour battle. Kleist finally gave up the time, but Ney’s schedule had been completely done in by the tough battle. In the meantime, Soult had been getting ready for his attack on the Prussians with Bertrand’s IV Corp. Soult had set Bertrand to go on the offensive supported by a grand battery of the Guard artillery of 60 guns. Soult’s extensive preparations paid dividends and Blucher’s Prussians started to wear down by 3pm. Blucher started to retreat. By 4pm, Alexander had determined the Coalition had lost the battle and had started to pull back the many heavy guns. The Coalition was successful in pulling back all of those guns from the French vice just before Ney was able to catch the escaping Russians and Prussians. There were many opportunities for the French to stop the Russians and Prussians, but none were realized. Recommended for multiple players and will take several days to finish, even with timed moves. Once Ney reaches his objectives, Napoleon orders the general attack. Play Scenarios Two and Seven first, or use the starting points listed in this scenario.

La Bataille de Bautzen
11.0 Scenario Three – La Bataille de Königswartha & Weissig 1813
Preliminary Activity of May 19, 1813
11.1 Introduction There was considerable activity and movement going on for several days between the French and Coalition armies before the Battle of Bautzen occurred. Right before the battle on May 19, there were two separate actions which would have ramifications for both sides. While jockeying for position, Barclay de Tolly thought he had run into a detached part of Lauriston’s V Corps at Königswartha, however it was part of Peyri’s Italian Division in Bertrand’s IV Corps, part of Napoleon’s main body. The Russian’s defeated the Italians easily, but they almost got trapped themselves fighting Napoleon. In the same day, Lauriston’s V Corp ran across the Prussians at Weissig, and almost defeated them before the Russian Grenadiers came to the Prussians’ defence. It was a close call for both sides. The larger battle would start the next day, and the French would storm and take Bautzen on May 20.

11.4 Start: 13:00

11.6 Notes This scenario combines Scenario Four and Scenario Five. It is intended that Scenario Three be played before Scenario One, which is the main battle. The result(s) detailed below will determine how aggressive the 18e & 19e divisions support Ney. Losses from the scenarios will be replaced at different ratios, depending on the Victory results.

11.11 Setup Troop’s set-ups and appearance are the same as detailed in Scenarios Four and Five
Both scenarios, especially Five, are excellent tutorials on La Bataille. The French are hindered by a lack of cavalry in both games, and must act cautiously. French firepower and infantry superiority are significant—especially in Weissig. Separate map see scenario. MAP
La Bataille de Bautzen
12.0 Scenario Four – La Bataille de Königswartha 1813 Peyri’s Italians Run into a Russian Buzz-saw
12.1 Introduction Before the Battle of Bautzen (on the 21st), both Napoleon and the Coalition were doing a lot of manoeuvring and shifting of positions in order to be prepared what was expected to be a big battle. The Russians were hoping to find Lauriston’s V Corps detached from Ney’s wing and thus ready to be defeated in detail. However, the Russians did not run into Lauriston’s Corps, but rather ran into Bertrand’s IV Corps at Königswartha. There they met Peyri’s Italian Division, Peyri and the Italians were not prepared for the Russians, who easily defeated the division. Overall, division suffered almost 3000 casualties and lost a foot battery to the Russian onslaught. However, the Russians just missed running directly into Napoleon, who could hear the battle from his headquarters. The battle should be an easy victory for the Russians. However, it is a good tutorial for players wanting to learn the system. The outcome will affect the Italian’s dispositions two days later at Bautzen as the casualties will be subtracted from Peyri’s command. The game should only take a few hours to play.

La Bataille de Bautzen
13.0 Scenario Five – La Bataille de Weissig 1813 Lauriston takes on both the Russians and Prussians
13.1 Introduction May 19, the day before the Battle of Bautzen started, there was considerable movement by both armies hoping to get an edge on the other prior to the start of the anticipated battle. There were two smaller battles that occurred on that day. One of them was the battle of Weissig between Lauriston’s French V Corps and a combined Russo-Prussian group under the Prussian Yorck and the Russian Guard Commander Raevsky, who was directing a very fine Grenadier Division. The Prussians had a small group of troops at Hermsdorf and had gone to meet Lauriston’s leading division under Maison which was attempting to take Weissig, which is just up the road. The French enter Weissig first, but then the Grenadiers attempt to retake it along with the Prussians. There is a several hour battle that takes place and the initiative shifts several times. This is a good introductory scenario and the Coalition advantage in cavalry makes itself known. The French have a slight advantage of artillery. Overall, the game is quite even, and it may take to the final turn to determine the outline. The game can be played in a couple of hours. Separate map see scenario. As Lauriston leaves Steinitz he encounters Prussians and hurries to bring forward his divisions. Yorck also calls for reinforcements and the Prussians try to catch the French before they concentrate.

La Bataille de Bautzen
14.0 Scenario Six – The Guards Face Off To Resolve the Battle
14.1 Introduction There were not many battles during the Napoleonic Wars in which the French Imperial Guard had such a significant role than at the Battle of Bautzen. In addition, there were few cases where the Russian Guard would go against the French Guard. But at Bautzen they did. As the afternoon of May 21 edged past noon, the French Young Guard lined up from Kenna to Basankwitz with 12 full regiments. Behind them, the Old Guard and Young Guard artillery lined up led by Generals Drouot and Devaux. Finally, eight battalions of the Old Guard infantry were in reserve along with over seven regiments of Guard Cavalry. In addition, Marshal Marmont with his artillery and two infantry divisions of the VI Corps, comprised in large part by 20 battalions of Marine infantry, were ready to advance into the fray to assist in the general advance. Facing this mighty French force were Russian General Gorschakov leading the Russian Centre with ample guns; the Russian reserve with the two Guard infantry divisions; Guard Cavalry; and finally the Russian Cuirassiers. If all of this would not stop the French Guard; the Guard guns; and the French Marines; then the Russians would be charged with removing their large guns. Needless to say, the casualties on both sides would be horrific. Macdonald's attack has failed and Napoleon commits the Imperial Guard. The Tsar commits his guard to bolster his wavering line and prevent a decisive French victory.
