MISSION STATEMENT Carousel Theatre for Young People (CTYP) empowers young people and families through playful,
imaginative and accessible theatre experiences that develop emotional literacy.
CORE VALUES
PLAYFULNESS · ACCESSIBILITY · ARTISTIC INTEGRITY · EMPATHY · MENTORSHIP · COMMUNITY
OUR STORYCTYP has been creating theatre for young audiences (TYA) since 1976. Located on Granville Island,
we are a gathering place for artists and young people where boundless imagination, a dash of
magic and an abundance of play create the recipe for theatrical adventure with lasting impact.
Our commitment to artistic excellence has resulted in a strong reputation as Vancouver’s
professional mainstage TYA company, a growing, loyal audience base, and numerous Jessie
Richardson Theatre Awards and nominations.
Young People are not simply audience members at CTYP; they are active participants, at the very
center of all that we do.
We stage vibrant stories that engage young people from the beginning of their development and
which challenge them through their formative years, empowering them to become agents of
positive change.
Stages of Play; the vision of Artistic Director Carole Higgins, embraces every area of play – on
stage, in the classroom, in rehearsal, in the audience - and emphasizes the importance of making
creativity an integral part of everyday life. Stages of Play encompasses a full season of professional
programming that celebrates stories that explore rites of passage through our Family Stage at the
Waterfront Theatre, explores Shakespeare’s canon through a contemporary lens every summer
with our Teen Shakespeare Stage and explores original Canadian creations for our BEE Stage.
We see the act of attending a play as a holistic experience that begins long before a young
person walks through our doors, and continues long after they leave the theatre.
Each year 35 000+ young people, educators and families experience our effervescent theatrical
experiences.
Our playful approach to creation and collaboration, unwavering commitment to outstanding
production values and exuberant attentiveness to mentoring emerging theatre artists are key
principals of our artistic practice.
We believe that theatre plays a key role in a young person’s development. Young people can
change the world, and theatre empowers them to do so.
Carousel Theatre for Young People creates and performs on the beautiful, traditional, ancestral
and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy ̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) & sel̓íl̓witulh
(Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
Welcome to our version of The Neverland.I hope you have the most
wonderful adventure. You CAN fly.
Carole Higgins,
ARTISTIC & MANAGING DIRECTOR
Carousel Theatre for Young People
carole@carouseltheatre.ca
T he creation of Peter Pan dates back to 2015 when the show’s composer, Landon Doak, hosted
a collective of young artist at his family home in Port Perry, Ontario. The Doak Family are the
owners of The Old Flame Brewery and there, under some twinkle lights, next to barrels of hops,
Peter Pan was first performed. The following year Bad Hats Theatre took the piece under its wing in our
inaugural Brewery Tour which saw the show touring to five local breweries across Toronto. Next, we
flew to Soulpepper Theatre in Toronto’s Distillery District where the show has found a home for several
years now. Peter Pan has also been seen across the Niagara Region on tour with Carousel Players, and
in Winnipeg at Manitoba Theatre For Young People.
It’s been an exceptional experience to grow alongside a production for this long, and to be able to
continually search for ways to improve and renew it. This adaptation, through and through, has been
created collectively by the artists both within the casts and on the creative teams from production to
production. Every artist we’ve collaborated with has their fingerprints on this show and we’re very proud
of making work that lends itself to this brand of rich collaboration. It’s utterly special to work on a piece
when the development history tells the same story as the play itself: the joy of inventing together.
Our adaptation is meant to be highly influenced by the company of artists working on it at any given
time, and no iteration has been exactly like the previous. We are thrilled that this tradition will continue at
Carousel Theatre For Young People this season. We know that this production of Peter Pan, the very first
to exist out of our hands at Bad Hats, will be deeply informed by the vibrant artists here, and we can’t
wait to see what new shape it will take in their very capable hands. We are honoured to be licensing this
project for the very first time. We hope and trust everyone will feel welcomed, surprised, and ignited by
Neverland as much as we have over the years.

and Ensemble). It has since been performed two years in a row as the headliner of Soulpepper

W elcome to Neverland. When I initially read The Bad Hat’s Peter Pan I exploded with
excitement about this wonderful new adaptation that reimagines the original source
material, propelling this well-known 1904 tale into our century. The talented creators
have birthed a beautiful script with new music that makes the journey to Neverland fresh, inviting
everyone, from the wee to the ancient, to fly.
Peter Pan: a classic story that’s enchanted young people and their families for generations in every art
form available! Live action and stop action film, opera and Etsy craft sites! Literally hundreds of versions
of this story.
Maybe because it’s a warm and familiar tale anchored in the vast and changeable world every child
knows best; their own imagination. Can’t get more timeless than that. At the heart of this story are
children who yearn for friendship, adventure and for the answers to big questions; what am I willing
to give or give up, to keep family, friendship, and love?
Questing through their fears and the patriarchy like us, Peter, Tinkerbell, the Darling children and
the lost boys seriously play out the enormous challenges of adult life. Changing and growing through
struggle and failure.
I hope you appreciate the creative spirit with which this play has been assembled; we’ve used
imagination and authenticity as our driving forces. We’ve reminded ourselves that in this day of shiny-
electrically-propelled-digitized toys, we have to take time to be real, with face to face relationships.
We also dared to put down the screens to play in the park with balls, ladders, boxes, fabric, ukuleles and
drums. We offer some simple magic with a loving invitation to you to come with us and fly to Neverland.

Pacific Northwest home for signs of forest
creatures. Can you find fairies – on these pages
or in your own magical space?
THIS IS SADIESara O’Learypictures by Julie MorstadFor Sadie, a box can be a boat or cushions a
castle. She can be a girl under the sea, or a
boy raised by wolves. There is no limit to the
adventures you can have with a big imagination
and a few good stories.
WALLPAPERThao LamIn this wordless story, a girl’s imaginary adventures
give her the courage to reach out for friendship
and the ability to recognise it in unexpected forms.
THE PEOPLE OF THE SEADonald Uluadluakpictures by Mike Motz“What I am about to share is a true story. It
happened to me when I was a child.” Friends
playing on the beach encounter an arnajuinnaq,
one of the people of the sea from Inuit myths.
DORY FANTASMAGORYAbby HanlonSix-year-old Dory relies on her wild imagination
to keep herself busy since her older siblings
refuse to play with her. The lines between fantasy
and real-life are often blurred in this laugh-
out-loud chapter book with equally hilarious
illustrations.

not you believe in fairies.
DRAGONS IN A BAGZetta Elliottillustrations by Geneva B Dragons aren’t supposed to live in Brooklyn!

London where magic abounds. Her life changes
when she finds herself under the protection of
her very own Golem made of char.
THE JUMBIESTracey BaptisteWhat if the stories about magic folk in the
mahogany forest are actually true? Eleven-year-
old Corinne must call on her courage and an
ancient magic to stop an evil spirit and save her
island home.
ARU SHAH AND THE END OF TIMERoshani ChokshiWhen her classmates try to catch her in an
imaginative lie, twelve-year-old Aru accidentally
wakes a demon and only the legendary Pandava
