It seems quite strange
that I am writing the July
edition of CtK News, this
year has passed by so
quickly! All public
examinations have now
b e e n s u c c e s s f u l l y
completed and we hope
that the students‟ hard
work will be reflected in
some good examination
results.
As always, we do say
goodbye to a couple of
colleagues who are
retiring Mrs Zarzycki and
Mrs Leak (who has
worked as a Science
technician for many
years). I would like to
express my deepest
gra t i tude f o r the i r
unrelenting commitment to
the Christ the King
community and wish them
all the very best as they
start what I hope will be a
very happy and healthy
retirement.
The new School brochure
and website will be ready
for the start of the autumn
term and I hope that you
will find the new website to
be easier to navigate with
its new „look‟ and design.
May I take this opportunity
to thank you once more for
your continuous support
with what has been a
challenging term and again
many thanks to you all
for your support as we
came to terms with the
loss of Mr Jonathan
Taylor.
Finally, I would like to
wish you all a very restful
and peaceful break with
family and friends. I look
forward to meeting our
students again in
September as we start a
new Academic year
together. I hope and pray
that it will be just as or
even more successful than
this year.
Best wishes to you all!

Athletics Success
It has been a very successful year for the
athletes at Christ the King School with
there being so many impressive
performances to mention!
The most notable achievement came in
t h e N o t t i n g h a m s h i r e C o u n t y
Championships, with seven athletes
being selected to represent Gedling
Schools. Georgia Clarke (Year 10) and R-
Marnei Williams (Year 8) both managed
to win their events on the day and were
crowned county champions. This meant
that they were both selected to represent
Nottinghamshire at the Mason Trophy in
Birmingham. A big well done goes out to
both girls for being the best in the county
at their own event!
The Year 7 and Year 8 girls‟ athletics
teams had their best ever finish at the
Gedling Athletics Championships this
summer, with both teams finishing
second. The Year 8 boys followed that
with a third placed finish at their
championships, with the Year 7 boys
finishing sixth overall. Congratulations
goes out to the six athletes who won gold
medals on this day and therefore being
crowned the best in Gedling at their
event.
Due to the improving standard of
athletics at our school, we were invited to
attend an athletics meet at Joseph
Whitaker School and again our athletes
more than held their own, with the Year 7
team finishing fourth on the day. Some
excellent individual performances were
displayed by Maya Hyacienth (Year 7) in
the long jump and Marcus Munjoma
(Year 7) in the high jump.
Well done to every athlete who has
represented the school this year!

Sixth Form News B Kuczynska - Head of Sixth Form
Election of Head Boy and Head Girl 2013
As year 13 students leave us in May, it is time
to hold elections for a new Head Boy and Head
Girl. This year we only had two candidates for
Head Boy but only one candidate for Head Girl
so it was decided to elect a Head Prefect and
Deputy Head Prefect. As always, hustings were
held all week during Acts of Worship and
candidates outlined their manifestos. Voting
took place all day, with Sixth Formers acting as
polling clerks and independent scrutineers. The
eventual winner was Estefano de Padua who
was duly elected Head Boy and Elisa Ellis came
second and carries the title Deputy Head
Prefect. Estefano leads a Prefect Team which
comprises: Pictured: candidates for Head Prefect with Vimbai (Head Girl) and Jhudari (Head Boy)
Congratulations
Sixth Former Piotr Kluk with
Professor Colin Blakemore at
the presentation ceremony
where Piotr won second prize
in a poster competition. We
reported on this in the last
newsletter, but at the time of
writing the photos were not
available. Just for clarification,
Professor Blakemore is on the
left!
Year 13 Leavers Liturgy
The end of our students‟ time in
the Sixth Form comes all too
quickly. The students arrived in
the morning as usual and were
incredibly excited about the day
ahead. Photographs, autographs
and squeals. Friendship and
camaraderie were most evident
when singing together as Rio
Malacarne entertained on the
accordion: tunes such “That‟s
amore”, “Roll out the barrel” and
the theme from “Titanic” complete
with re- enactment of Leonardo
and Kate “flying”.
As always, the end of lessons is
marked with a celebration of their
time with us. The celebration is a
juxtaposition of formal prayers
and readings and less formal
contributions by the students.
Identical twins, Tanaka and
Tanatswa read the bidding
prayers, together, Vimbai (Head
Girl) read a passage from a letter
from St. Paul, and Thandoe
performed a poem she had written
called, ”Goodbye.” All four girls
have been affectionately referred
to as “Team Zim” as they
originally came to us from
Zimbabwe. All have been Prefects
and have served the school
community in an exemplary
manner. In fact not only did we
have Team Zim, but also Teams
Po lska , I t a l ia and Eire ,
underlining the richness of
cultures at CTK.
Michael Shelley and Luke O‟Hara
(winners of CTK‟s got talent)
entertained with guitar and song
and set the scene for a transition
to the less formal elements. Lydia
Loscalzo had masterminded
awards, gently lampooning
everyone in the year; no-one was
safe! Mrs. Kuczynska had
prepared a presentation, a
montage of images of the students
over the years, engaging in various
silly antics. This, coupled with
their original year 7 photos and
appropriate captions caused great
hilarity. All of this against a
backdrop of Carly Simon singing,
“Nobody does it better.”
Out came Rio‟s accordion again
and he played with gusto as we all
had afternoon tea with glorious
cheesecakes and gateaux. The
students lingered, not wanting to
leave the Common Room where
they had wasted time for two
years, but they had to. The
afternoon ended most pleasantly
with a final piece of wisdom from
Guru Kuczynska:
“No matter how old you are,
when you go out into the
world, it is always best to hold

Year 13 Leavers Ball
The theme for this year‟s Leavers
Ball was James Bond, and as
always was held at Bestwood
Lodge Hotel. Everyone entered
into the spirit of the occasion,
dressing appropriately. A disco
followed a splendid three course
meal, awards were presented in
various categories and the
evening ended with carriages at
midnight. Everyone left shaken
but not stirred.
Lydia Loscalzo got
my vote for Miss
Moneypenny
and
Rio Malacarne
must certainly be
the next James

Heading to Lourdes
FIVE million pilgrims make their way
to Lourdes every year – a town with a
population of just 15,000. The small
market town in south-west France, in
the foothills of the Pyrenees, became a
major pilgrimage spot after a number
of reported apparitions in the
nineteenth century. In 1858, a 14-
year-old girl told her mother a lady
had spoken to her from the
Massabielle cave. That girl was Saint
Bernadette Soubirous, who was later
canonised. A number of healings are
said to have taken place in the
Lourdes water spring, which many
Christians, both Roman Catholic and
Protestant, believe have validated
Saint Soubirous‟ claims. In honour of
this, some of our Year 12 students
pupils have cycled round the school
933 times to raise money for their own
pilgrimage to France. The pupils are
going to Lourdes later this month to
help elderly and disabled Catholics on
the traditional pilgrimage. They
cycled round the school 933 times as
the school is 933 miles away from
Lourdes. The cycle ride raised more
than £800, and contributed to their
£2,450 target to make the trip. The
nine sixth-formers are paying for half
of the cost of the 26-hour coach ride
and paying for the rest through
various fundraising activities
including cake sales and non-uniform
days. Emily Nash, said: “I want to go
to Lourdes because I want to help
those who, without our help, would
not be able to go.” Fellow pupil
Kathryn Fitzmaurice added: “I think
all of our legs are still hurting from
the cycling, but it was a really fun
way of raising money together.”
Father Simon Gillespie, deputy
director of the Nottingham Diocesan
Lourdes Pilgrimage, said: “It‟s only
with the generosity of the students
that we are able to take these people
to Lourdes.” “The trip teaches them
team-building and they will get to
know a lot of people their age by
working with them during the
pilgrimage. “And one of the most
important things is that they will see
how much their efforts are
appreciated by the local communities.
” Joe Hopkins our Lay Chaplain said:
“It‟s not a school trip, and they are not
going sightseeing. That‟s what makes
their commitment so impressive. A lot
of effort has gone into the
fundraising.” He added that the school
had a fond tradition of Year 12
students making the trip. “Everyone
gets their friends and the community
involved so the fund raising is more
than just paying for the trip. Year 9
children are already talking about
how they can‟t wait to go in three
years‟ time, ” he said. Finally, the
Year 12 students would like to thank
those who sponsored them from the
parishes of The Good Shepherd,
Arnold; Holy Cross, Hucknall; Sacred
Heart, Carlton; and Infant of Prague,
Bestwood Park. As well as their fellow
students at Christ the King who
showed their support by having a non-
uniform day and cheered them on .

CTK at the Albert Hall
Nottingham Citizens is a group of lots of people from all
different backgrounds who all want to make Nottingham a
better place. There was a meeting in November last year
and important people like MP‟s and Paddy Tipping the police
commissioner were there. They were given lots of questions
and were asked for serous answers as to whether they would
help Nottingham Citizens. Last week, there was another
meeting and I, James Akers and Jhudari Scholar and other
pupils and teachers went. It was at the Albert on the 27th of
June 2013. The Albert Hall was a massive place and was
built by the Methodist church. When I got there, Miss Nokes
asked me to go on stage and speak in front of 1,000 people. I
had to say my name and that I represented CTK and I was in
Year 7. It was a bit scary and everyone clapped Jhudari was
on the panel of people who were asking questions to the MP‟s
and Paddy Tipping and he was chairing the Assembly along
with 3 other leaders in the city. They were given 3 minutes to answer questions by the panel and Jhudari
rang his bell if they went over their 3 minutes. James Akers also asked them questions, and we all clapped
when he went on stage. They all agreed that they would support Nottingham Citizens In lots of things
like: Giving workers the living wage which is more than the minimum wage; Putting police offers on some
school bus routes to protect children;
Making Nottingham a safer place in clubs and bars at night for young people; Giving more support to
those that mental health problems and women and men who suffer domestic violence. Everyone agreed
that it was a fantastic evening with many promises made by important people to support Nottingham
Citizens.

CTK Cats
On Friday 5th July, the Year 7 and 8
girls Cheerleading Team named „CTK
Cats‟ performed in their first
competition at The Becket School in
West Bridgford. The routine was
brilliantly choreographed by Mrs
Hatton, cramming in many lifts,
stunts, pyramids, tumbles and dance
work for the 2 ½ minutes allocated. A
few girls had never cheered before but
thanks to Mrs Hatton‟s excellent
coaching, they we successful and
finished in 3rd position! A huge
congratulations to (see picture) Back
row (left to right): Rosie Hoyle, Jodie
Flower, Amy Hoyle. Front row (left to

Practice will be opening up to ALL
YEARS as of September. A bigger
squad is needed to perform bigger and
better stunts! Please see extra-
curricular timetable from September
for training practice times. All are
welcome!

999 Safety Days
On Thursday 20th June (Year 7) and Friday 21st June (Year 8) Christ the King hosted 999 Safety days
organised by Paul Kanikowski our School Liaison Officer. Seven agencies ran sessions covering a wide
range of topics that deal with a large part of the Citizenship syllabus.
All the sessions lasted 30 minutes and were led by agencies based in our local community. The pupils
really engaged with the topics covered and represented our academy brilliantly. The alcohol awareness
session was a big success as pupils had to pour what they thought 1 unit of alcohol was – let‟s just say
they were very generous!

Tour De Fred
10 students from Christ the King were part of the Diocesan group that welcomed Fred Uttley from
Padiham in Lancashire, who reached Nottingham Cathedral on day 19 of his challenge to cycle to all 22
Catholic dioceses in England & Wales in just under three weeks – a challenge that has been dubbed the
„Tour de Fred‟. By cycling more than 1,000 miles round the country Fred hopes to raise funds for farmers
in Bangladesh, and inspire others to campaign against world hunger.
Fred was not travelling alone. Paralympian Mark Brown, who won a silver medal at Sydney in 2000, had
accompanied Fred on the whole of the „Tour de Fred‟, at times cycling with him, at times driving the
support vehicle. Mark, the husband of Fred‟s niece, is an experienced cyclist and a former soldier who lost
his left arm in an accident. Both Fred and Mark were given a warm welcome by a group of students and
staff from Christ the King Secondary School, Arnold, Nottingham, alongside Marie Molloy, Diocesan
Manager and Cathedral Dean, Fr Geoffrey Hunton, when they arrived shortly before 1 pm mass. After
mass there was time for all to chat to Fred and Mark about their experiences and enjoy a light picnic lunch
in the cathedral garden before the cyclists had to set off for Hallam Diocese.
Both Fred and Mark admitted to be looking
forward to their return home to Salford Diocese
on Saturday and the chance to be reunited with
their families. Fred said: ”I have met such
lovely people along the way, visited schools,
taken part in parish events, been offered
hospitality in supporters homes – it has been
an amazing experience.” For Mark, the biggest
challenge was plotting the route avoiding busy
major roads and steep hills! Fred, a great
grandfather, former plumber and ardent
Burnley FC fan, has volunteered for CAFOD
for more than ten years, in particular
organising CAFOD schools football
competitions. In 2004, he visited Liberia, in
West Africa, with CAFOD, where he met
former World Player of the Year, George Weah,
and presented strips from Burnley, Everton,
Liverpool, and his local junior team to teams
using football in Liberia as a unifying force in the former war-torn country.
Fred says that the inspiration for his bike ride came out of the blue, as an alternative to his parish‟s
regular fundraising quiz. He said: “I wanted to think of another way to raise money, so I was sat at home
and then it came to me, „Why don‟t I do a bike ride round each of the dioceses in the UK for CAFOD?‟”
Both Fred and Mark were very grateful for the support shown to them by our students.
You can support the Tour de Fred at justgiving.com/tourdefred.

Trip to Loughborough University
On Thursday 20th June some of our Year 10 students went
on a visit to Loughborough University for a maths filled
day organised by the Access to Further Mathematics and
Loughborough University. The theme of the day was
Rollercoasters and we learnt all about the maths behind
the rides at Alton Towers (including the new ride Smiler),
designed our own loop the loop and developed our
understanding of 3D shapes. Michael Killingworth,
together with his team, won a prize for building an
icosahedron (a Platonic solid with 20 equal triangular
faces). The day was rounded off with a tour of the
University itself and its impressive sports facilities. We
even got to see inside the National Cricket Performance
Centre and the Seb Coe High Performance Athletics
Centre. Hopefully it made all involved realise how exciting
it would be to study Maths at A Level and beyond.

Year 11 Prom
As is tradition our year 11 students celebrated the end of their GCSE exam period with a fantastic Prom at
the Rutland Square Hotel. It was a brilliant evening that saw some superb entrances with even better
outfits. It was a great way to bring the academic year to a close. The students enjoyed food, an awards
presentation and lots of dancing throughout the night. Special congratulations goes out to Charlie Dawn
Sadler and Amarie Colphon who won the award for Prom Queen and Prom King. Thank you to all of the
students and staff who helped make it a wonderful evening. Mr Baxter
More Athletics Talent at CTK!
Due to our improved performance in athletics as a school, we have been invited to a number of athletics
meets in recent weeks by schools in the local area who excel in athletics. We attended a Year 7 and Year 8
competition at Joseph Whitaker School alongside Toothill School, Magnus School, Arnold Hill Academy
and The Minster School, coming second in the Year 8 competition and third in the Year 7 competition.
This is an outstanding achievement by the pupils and it demonstrates the high level of talent that we
have at Christ the King.

Showcase 2013
On Thursday 20th June, Christ the King Voluntary Academy hosted the annual „Showcase Evening‟ for
Year 5 students and parents of the primary schools from our Academy Trust. Teachers from Christ the
King went out to the primary schools and had just one day to prepare their performances for the evening!
The Showcase proved to be an exceptional success, as all of the schools displayed their talents to
contribute towards a terrific evening. Mrs Stanley, CTK‟s new Drama teacher, worked wonders with the
students of Sacred Heart in Carlton, as they produced „visual poetry,‟ performing Roald Dahl‟s Revolting
Rhymes. Miss Wooley, ICT teacher and choreographer-extraordinaire, worked with the students of St
Margaret Clitherow, as they danced their hearts out in a Street Dance performance. Mrs Harvey, who we
recently welcomed back from her maternity, showed us exactly why we have missed her so much, as she
got her Year 9 Music GCSE students to work with students from Good Shepherd on a stunning
performance of ‟Just The Way You Are‟ by Bruno Mars and with Holy Cross School in Hucknall, as they
performed „Written In The Stars‟ by Tinie Tempah brilliantly.
All of these performances were supported by some of the exceptional talent of our own Christ the King
Students, as Daniel Bartley displayed his skill with the flute and Genine Labis sang „When There Was Me
and You‟ from High School Musical, the school‟s recent show, as she brought the house down with an eye-
watering display of vocal talent. As well as these performances,
the audience was also treated to a beautiful rendition of Jeff
Buckley‟s Halleluiah, by Jacob Seelochan, Genine Labis, Megan
Leask-Walters and James Akers. Finally, the newly formed CTK
Cheerleading group performed in public for the first time. It was
a terrific celebration of the many talents of all of the children in
the Pax Christi Academy Trust and we look forward to
welcoming the Year 5s (who will then be year 6s!) to Christ the
King for our Open Evening on September the 19th. Well done to
all who were involved! Mr Brogan
Gedling Athletic Development Agency Achievements
This weekend‟s competition went extremely well, all of our athlete‟s made an amazing effort and came back
with placings of: two 1st‟s two seconds and a 4th and 5th. Durrell and Keiron went up against some much
bigger boys in the U17‟s category and achieved 4th and 5th which is incredible considering they were
competing with dedicated weightlifters. Keiron and Durrell not only represented G.A.D.A. but also
represented CTK and did both proud with their conduct, enthusiasm and respect throughout the day. Here

News from the Chaplain:
Lourdes
By the time you are reading this we will be back from Lourdes. Nine sixth formers, Mrs Walton, Miss
Nokes and I have joined many others from across the diocese to go on pilgrimage to Lourdes. I am very
proud of the 6th Formers who have worked really hard fundraising throughout this year; this isn‟t a holiday
for them, the go to help and care for others, so their efforts should be acknowledged. One of our most recent
fundraising events has been „Cycle to Lourdes‟ 933 laps around the tennis courts representing the 933
miles between CtK and Lourdes. We would like to thank all those who sponsored us, particularly those
from our Parishes, approximately £700 was raised! We are keeping all of CtK, the other Academies in our
trust and the members of our parishes in our prayers throughout the pilgrimage.
Next Year
When we return in September the Chapel will be completely refurbished! It will be open more often and
will be a beautiful, relaxing place to come to find some peace.
There will also be some new activities and events happening in the Chapel:
Morning Grace: Every morning before school- a time for quiet, a time for peace, a time for prayer. 8.15
-8.35am
Mass: Every Thursday at Lunch time in the Chapel
Oasis: We all need a time to stop and think. To be refreshed, renewed and reconciled. Feel
free to drop in for a few minutes or stay for longer. There will also be the opportunity
for confession. Monthly at Friday Lunch times!
And many more to follow!
Finally I hope you have a wonderful (and safe) holiday. To our students thank you for welcoming me this
term and I look forward to seeing you all again in September. God Bless. Joe, School Chaplain
