Case Study on Electric Power Crisis In PakistanBy Musa RazaProfessor : Eric Pollock

Helsinki Metropolia & HTW-Berlin

Geographical Position of Pakistan

Facts & FiguresPakistan’s energy crisis initiated in the end of 1999 which turned out to be worse since last one decade.

Max Production capacity = 21,143 MW Max Electricity Production =5,643 MW Current Electricity Demand =21,000MW Electric Power shortfall of = 5,500MW

There are approximately 6-12hours blackouts in cities & 10-16hours in rural areas during peak.

Production means for electricity

Energy Potential Solar energy production potential is

2,900,000MW against current production of 20+ MW Only!

Wind energy production potential is 340000MW against current production of 255.4 MW.

Hydro energy production potential is 60,000MW against current production of 6720MW.

Pakistan has one of world’s largest coal deposits of 185 billion tons and unfortunately more than 90% resources are still unexplored.

Causes of Electrical Power Crisis• Mismanagement of energy resources..• Dependency on expensive means of productivity e.g Oil & Gas.• Aging of equipment.• Faulty distribution system.• Silting Process.• Economic & Political instability.• Illiteracy & Poverty.• Electricity Theft.• Huge energy losses due to poor and old infrastructure.• Lack of Periodical Maintenance.

Solution to Pakistan’s Increasing Electricity Crisis

It is a biggest challenge for the nation to fix this increasing energy crisis.Following approaches can be adopted to cope up with this crisis.

• Increase IPPs (Independent power producers).

• Reactivation of closed power stations.

• Importing electricity from neighbouring countries to improve the situation and rebuilding of industries.

• Utilization of available renewable energy resources.

• Development & Installation of biogas, solar, wind & micro hydro-based projects in villages

• Development & installation of coal based powerhouses.

• Construction of new proposed dams.

• Exploration and management of available resources like coal, gas & oil.

Suggestions Completion & focus to on-going hydro, solar, wind energy projects.

Educate individuals to save energy.

Transparent bill recovery system.

Continuous maintenance of the existing power stations on yearly basis to

improve their life.

Designating right professionals to right positions with an ability to assess

the future energy demands and their management.

Promoting education so literacy rate could be improved which certainly is

root cause of such issues.
