Creating Videos in Your Class

It’s Worth It!

[Schools and]…Libraries need to

change from places just to get stuff

to places to make stuff, do stuff,

and share stuff. (Valenza &

Johnson, 2009)

Why Use Video?

• Engages students• Helps with meaning-making• Works for visual learners• Is automatically differentiated• Supports a skill that is increasingly a 21-

century expectation• Offers a more authentic audience• Creates opportunities for choice

Technology we used

• Windows Media Maker (PC) or iMovie (Mac)• Conversion program like freefileconvert.com • A class set of Flip cameras with tripods for

checkout as a complete set • Microphones & stands for podcasting/better

audio recording

Management Issues/What to Consider

• Include video clips and samples in your curriculum.• “Practice makes perfect”—have patience with

learning the technology at first.• You need to have exemplars available for students.• Time:

--Will students be working outside of school?--Are you using a class set or are you using a few cameras?

Management Issues/What to Consider

• This is an organizational challenge.--Need organizational sign-outs--Time for tech problems--Computers need the necessary software--File transfer from camera to computer can be challenging--Scheduling/sharing of equipment needs to be planned early.--Where are kids filming? You might want extra spaces available.
