Crane Operator Training Prompts

Main components of cranePrompt 1

• Boom or Jib• Counter Weight• Rope• Engine• Wheels• Operators Cab• Carrier• Turntable• Outriggers

Types of Cranes common to the Oil & Gas fieldRough Terrain & All Terrain

Prompt 2

• Rough Terrain. You will find these on most Rigs. Only one operators cab

• All Terrains. These are common to most sites. You can operate them from 1 cab but drive them from the 2 cabs. Very versatile

Truck MountPrompt 3

• Commonly found on building sites.

• You can operate from the upper cab and drive them from the lower cab.

• Poor turning circle

Crawler CanePrompt 4

• Crawler Cranes have• Lattice Booms• They have tracks to

travel on instead of wheels

• No outriggers• Can turn in its own

circle

The OperatorPrompt 5

• You need to have a R.O.P license

• You need to have a current medical certificate

• You need good eyesight & hearing

• You need to have good knowledge of English

• You need to have common sense and be able to judge distances

Protective clothing for the operatorPrompt 6

• Safety Helmet• Safety Glasses• Coveralls• Safety Gloves ( not for

actual operation)• Safety Shoes

Pre-Crane Start Up CheckPrompt 7

• Sheaves• Rope /guards• Oil / coolant• Coolant / fuel• Hydraulic Oil• Tires• Look for Oil Leaks

Crane Set UpPrompt 8

• Firm Ground conditions• Outriggers fully extended• Correct Working Radius• Working area clear of

unauthorized personnel• Free from any hazards• Crane Operator & Riggers

understands exactly what needs to be done

Crane Operational Check without loadPrompt 9.

• Check Radius• Make sure the crane is

level• The outriggers are fully &

wheels are free from the ground

• Check the load indicator against the load chart

• Go through all crane operational motions i.e

Lifting the loadPrompt 10

• Confer with the banksman and others involved with the lift.

• Ensure the load is slinged correctly & safely with the correct capacity (S.W.L) lifting tackle

• On the signal from the banksman lift the load approx: 12” from the ground and check for level & stability

Travel the loadPrompt 11

• Travel the load to the landing site

• Use a tagline to help control the load

• Land the load on timbers

• Ensure the load is stable & remove rigging tackle

Insecure loadPrompt 12

• Should the load become unstable land it carefully and re rig the load correctly.

• Very poor rigging• The load will fall apart

at any time.

Potential HazardsPrompt 13

• Ensure you don’t travel the load over someone's head it could get in the way.

Hazards continued Prompt 14

• Do not operate long booms in windy or gusty conditions.

• The force of a strong wind could easily blow a crane with a long boom over.

Power Lines HazardPrompt 15

• Electric power lines are a extreme danger

• Electricity can arc over 6 mts.

• Keep your boom away from power lines.

• If you are working near them get it in writing that the power is switched off.

Hazards ContinuedPrompt 16

• Never work near welding operations.

• Never allow anyone to weld on your crane without authorization and the correct welding procedures

Hazards ContinuedPrompt 17

• Make sure there is no underground power lines or other unforeseen objects where you are about to set up your crane.

Hazards ContinuedPrompt 18

• Don’t operate your crane near edges of excavations you do not know what is there.

The things you should not do whilst operating your crane

Prompt 19• Do not operate your crane

if you are under the influence of alcohol.

• Drugs• Prescribed drugs unless

you have a medical certificate allowing you to operate the crane.

The things not to do continuedPrompt 20

• No smoking cigarettes or other whilst operating your crane

The things not to do continuedPrompt 21

• Its not a good bet to let anyone ride the hook or load , he has legs make him walk.

The things you must do whilst operating your crane

Prompt 22• Check your crane

before you operate it• Ensure you know the

weight of the load• Inspect the rigging

tackle• Ensure no hazards

The things you must do whilst operating your crane

Prompt 23• Ensure whilst

operating the crane all your limbs are inside the confines of the cab.

• Obey hand signals from a designated signalman

The things you must do whilst operating your crane

Prompt 23• Always purge the

outriggers after a tea brake.

• When you feel tired due to heat stop and have a cup of tea or coffee.

The things you must do whilst operating your crane

Prompt 24• Take advantage of any

training offered.• They are there to

enhance the operators capabilities of becoming a professional operator

The things you must do whilst operating your crane

Prompt 25• Always consult your

load charts and check they correspond with the load indicator.

• After you have determined the weight of the load you consult your load charts and verify the radius.

The things you must do whilst operating your crane

Prompt 26• You must physically

measure your radius.• Remember radius is

measured from center of rotation of the slew ring to the center of the vertical line running through the center of the hook block.

Measured RadiusPrompt 26A

• The radius is 10 meters.

Radius 10 mts

The things you must do whilst operating your crane

Prompt 27• If you find a fault with

your crane whilst working you must stop the crane and put it safe, notify the supervisor and call the mechanic.

Cooperating with othersPrompt 28

• It is of the utmost important that you the crane operator discuss the lift with all the people that are concerned with the lift.I.e supervisors , riggers etc.

Radio communication.Prompt 29

• Some times if you cannot see the load at all times then radio communication may be the only answer.

• There are set procedures to follow.

The Emergency StopPrompt 30

• You the operator take the hand signals from a designated signalman.

• YOU MUST OBEY THE EMERGENCY STOP SIGNAL FROM ANYONE!

Avoid Low Boom AnglesPrompt 35

Long Boom Lengths low boom anglesIs the best way of tipping your craneOver. Avoid them at all costs

Low boom angles below 40 degs should be avoided at all costsNever mind what boom length is required.
