Writing
This week your writing activity is split into 3 separate tasks you can complete over the week. The

Not Yet
As the night comes darker,
As the clouds turn grey,
As the sun abandons us,
Comes the end of the day.
But have you ever wondered,
What’s in the black of night?
What creeps and peeks and lingers?
But stays out of sight?
I once did sit and wonder,
I once did sit and think,
About what is in the deadly dark,
What made that clink?
I sat up in my covers,
I slightly opened my eyes,
But only dark surrounded me,
With not a place to hide,
I heard it on the carpet,
Slithering across the floor,
I heard it creeping up,
Something at the door.
The handle rattled slightly,
The covers shivered too,
I glanced from cover to door to cover,
Something had come through.
I felt it coming closer,
Brush against my leg,
A step across the carpet,
Something near my head.
Fight or flight the question,
An instinct to be made,
A step across the carpet,
My sight begins to fade.
I move beneath my covers,
It’s gone from my brow,
A step across the carpet,
Something’s coming now.
I sit and listen closely,
My head is drenched with sweat,
I prayed that it was over,
Not yet.
Task 1: Analysing a poem
Read the poem carefully and follow the steps below. When analysing (thinking about) a text like
this it is good to discuss it with another person so try to find someone at home you can read it wit
Underline examples of rhyming couplets in blue.
Underline ‘mood words’- words which create a spooky atmosphere in red.
Underline 3 words in green and check their definition in a dictionary.
This is a useful online dictionary: https://www.collinsdictionary.com/
Task 2: Planning your writing
Look carefully at this stimulus (picture). Task
3 is to write a detailed description of the
setting shown in this stimulus.
A good way to plan your writing is to
create a word bank of ‘mood words’ you
can use to describe your setting.
• Write a list of ‘mood words’ you could
use to describe this picture. Think about
your 5 senses and how you would feel
standing in front of this house.
Task 3: Writing your description
Write a paragraph describing this setting. Take your time to read and edit your writing as you write.
We are looking forward to seeing what you write!
Success Criteria:
• Your paragraph should accurately describe the stimulus. Remember you are not telling a story
but a description of the setting at this moment. We should not meet anyone or go inside the
house.
• You should write in 1st person (I saw…).
• Try to use interesting WOW words and descriptive phrases- use your word bank from task 2!
• Use your senses to describe the setting (see/hear/touch/smell/taste).
