Day and beforethe IOI Awards Ceremony thescientific committee establishesthe medal distribution. Themedals will be awarded basedon the number of points thecontestants achieved. For eachof the medals, the scientificcommittee establishes the mini-mum score necessary to

achieve this medal. Each medalwill be awarded to preciselythose contestants who reachedor exceeded the respectiveminimum score, and didn’tachieve a better medal. Themedal boundaries are uniquelydetermined by the followingrules:

The score necessary toachieve a gold medal is thelargest score such that at least

one twelfth of all contestantsreceive a gold medal.

The score necessary toachieve a silver medal is thelargest score such that at leastone fourth of all contestantsreceive a silver or a gold medal.

The score necessary toachieve a bronze medal is thesmallest score such that atmost one half of all contestantsreceive a medal.

Counting the medalsTwenty-five or twenty-six gold medals will be awarded

to the most outstanding participants in the contest,announced yesterday Kircho Atanasov, Chair of theHost Organizing Committee of the ХХI Olympiad inInformatics in Plovdiv. The number of medal winnersdepends on their scores in the two competition days.Silver medals will go to 50-52 contestants, while bronzewill be given to 75-78 of them. The final arrangementsconcerning the final rankings of the teams will still be in

progress today.After the secondcompetition day,unlike the first one,there were someclaims duly filedwith the relevantcommittees.

Rumen Hristov is the Bulgarian partici-pant with greatest chances for gold.

He studies in the 10th class of the„Nencho Popovich“ Secondary School inShumen, as well at the A&B TrainingSchool. Among his rich collection ofmedals at national and internationalOlympiads is his last year’s silver medalfrom Cairo.

Two other Bulgarians on the nation-al teams also study in Shumen: MomchilIvanov and Mihail Kovachev. Theirteacher, Biserka Yovcheva, is also attend-ing the Olympiad.

President Georgi Parvanov paidspecial interest to Rumen’s computingskills before the opening of the Olympiad.

China, Russia, USA, Taiwan,Japan, and Belarus are among

the countries whose contestantshave the highest aggregate scores atIOI2009. There are no official rank-ings, but there has been a living tra-dition so far to have an unofficial

ranking according to aggregatescores.

Nine claims were filed after thesecond competition day. After a thor-ough review, consent was reached onall matters and no mistakes on part ofthe Jury were found.
