The Environment Agency of Iceland

The Environment Agency operates under the direction of the Ministry for the Environment. It's role is to promote the protection as well as sustainable use of Iceland’s natural resources, as well as public welfare by helping to ensure a healthy environment, and safe consumer goods

Roles of different authorities concerning oil spills

• The EA is responsible for• monitoring marine pollution • preparedness for and response to oil discharges• oil spill emergency response plans

• The coast guard is an operational authority• in monitoring the ocean areas around Iceland• in response activities in oil incidents

Marine pollution prevention

• Pollution within harbour areas• Port master responsible for actions• Local health inspectorate supervises• Can call EA for assistance

• Pollution outside harbour areas• EA is responsible for actions in close cooperation with

Coast Guard, the Icelandic Transport Authority and others.
