pg 83

Review: What are the 3 rules of Natural Selection?

•Variation in a population is due to the environment or heredity or both.

•Speciation – when a new species is created

•Speciation occurs when members of similar populations can no longer interbreed and produce viable offspring. (they are too separated or too different to have babies)

Glue in to pg 82 (under video questions)

What type of Speciation barrier are these? Label the pictures.

Barriers that can create new species:

•Geographical Barriers – something physically separates two groups so they can no longer mingle.

Now you try it…

• You will get two cards representing your genes• All the genes in the “class population” are the

gene pool.• Trade cards with a neighbor to represent new

generations• If the gene pool changes, evolution/speciation

has occurred.

•Reproductive Barrier – two organisms may mate, but they can’t produce an offspring, or the offspring is sterile.

You try it

•Get your gene cards out again.

•Behavioral Barrier – groups have different behaviors so they never mix
