The paintings of Ann Shogren express a unique vision of how art can capture and hold the energy of it’s subject. Her art has inspired collectors from a very young age.

Shogren brings to her work the freedom of spontaneous gesture while maintaining a planned conscious and unconscious balance of light, texture and energy in each piece.

The viewer is encouraged to experience the piece in their own way while allowing themselves to feel the colors and light that seems to emanate from the art. Shogren says she sees the beauty and energy of life that surrounds us even more clearly every year. Though her subjects are often identifiable, when Shogren works, her interest is less about a technical rendering of the subject and much more about trying to cap-ture the elusive energy she feels.

“Positive, happy energy and interesting light is what I am drawn to.” This makes for an ongoing collection of energetic pieces that enliven spaces and uplift moods.

Throughout her landscapes, abstracts, and other works, Ann’s use of color and how one color harmonizes with the next color effects the feeling of the art. She chooses harmonious colors or more variation in tone and contrast depending on the subject. Shogren’s goal is for the energy of the art piece to fill the space around the art while still leaving room for the viewer to feel that they can experience the art and what it has to say.

Shogren works on canvas, silk and paper. She often collages pieces of paper or silk art onto her canvas pieces. She always has a plan for her art when she starts a piece but tries to stay open to letting the art itself “tell her” what it needs next and she says “as long as I pay attention, my art definitely tells me the instant it is done.” Known for experimentation, she continually develops new techniques that involve creating new tools, paints and systems to make the best interpretation of her artistic vision.

Her mediums vary depending on the piece. Shogren often uses oil paint, acrylics, glazes, ground marble, archival pigment prints, and pastels. Sometimes, all on the same piece.

Shogren was born in 1961 in Iowa. She has a unique educational background that includes a BA from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa and an MBA from the University of Portland, Portland, Oregon.

Shogren’s pieces are in 100”s of private and corporate collections.
