Unattended – So What?

• What’s so special or different about unattended?• How does unattended differ from retail and why look at this sector

specifically?– Distinct rules* for this terminal type and…– Particular suitability for Contactless in some of these environments– Technical integration can be a different proposition– Unattended has historically always been the ‘poor relation’ with card

payment

Contactless is changing this.

The Rules

• Standards – all card payment has certain key common elements• Specific environments and markets have more specific and varied rules• Who makes these unattended rules and why?

o   Visa, MasterCard & UKCAo   Variety of reasons: • Security (value of transactions)• Branding (honour all cards/customer experience)• Strategy (cash migration/incentives)

Standardisation: What Are Open Standards?

• WIKI says: An open standard is a standard that is publicly available and has various rights to use associated with it, and may also have various properties of how it was designed (e.g. open process). There is no single definition and interpretations vary with usage.

• The payment industry is not so much about open standards but more about layers of standards and approval authorities.

– EMV. Open? Interoperable anyway– PCI DSS. Mandated by industry, but consistent/open– Visa, MasterCard. Scheme owned. For Contactless, individual/proprietary– Local approval (UKCC/ APACS)

Almost 10 Years On…

• London contactless launch was 2007. • Rapid evolution since introduction. • Different Kernel specifications for Visa and MasterCard (and Amex &

Discover) released in succession.• Rules changes:o   Parking – Much needed evolution to Chip/Contactless (2010) and Contactless only (2015)

o   Vending – First accepted contactless only acceptance

o   Charities – New innovation (Led by CAF’s pilot last year) now massively increasing

The Latest Changes

• ApplePay, Android Pay etc

• Contactless with everything (Since Jan 2016)

• High value Contactless

• EMV transit model (cf TFL)

 Deploying a Contactless Payment Solution

• Know the rules for your market (no point building something that you’re not allowed to use)

• Component parts of a solution .. . . . how many different certificates??• Consider ‘Buy or Build’ option very carefully.• Speak to experts early on to identify existing solutions. – It’s not just a question of

choosing a reader ‘off the shelf’ and expecting to go live next month!

Summary

• Contactless can be a huge advantage in many cases, but needs to be well planned and implemented to make the most of the opportunity.
