How Technology is Important for Healthy Aging

By Tiffany Bingham , Louisville Business Journal

Technology and seniors are two words that a lot of people might not immediately pair. But that’s chang-ing. There are a host of assistive technologies, apps, mobile devices and even virtual reality (VR) experi-ences that are making healthy aging easier than ever before. Here are some of the gadgets and gizmos that will make life a breeze for seniors and caregivers. 1. Activity sensors It’s one of the primary worries for the family members of elders who live alone: what if Mom falls, can’t reach the phone and no one is around to summon help? In the 1980s, wearable, wireless emergency call buttons were developed and popularized as a means of addressing this prob-lem. But their efficacy is limited. What if your parent hits his or her head and is knocked unconscious? A call button only works if a senior can activate it. Now, infrared and auditory activity sensors can be placed in your older loved one’s home. They discreetly monitor for motion and sound and allow adult children or caregivers to check and make sure Mom or Dad is up and moving around as usual. If human activity isn’t detected when it should be, or for an extended period of time, the system can automatically summon the caregiver, a designated neighbor, and/or emergency services. 2. App-based medication management The second most common worry for caregivers might be whether or not an older loved one is taking medications as prescribed. A study recently published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research showed that mobile apps help to improve medication adher-ence for older adults. App-based medication reminder programs, like MediSafe Meds and Pills Remind-er, are giving families peace of mind. MediSafe can be integrated with iPhone HealthKit to track blood glucose, blood pressure, and weight. The app also helps educate users about food and drug interactions. There’s a fun side to this offering, too. Set the alert tones so Darth Vader or Austin Powers will tell your parent when to take meds. 3. Therapeutic robot Advanced interactive robots such as PARO, which is created to look and sound like a baby harp seal, provide the benefits of animal therapy to adults with dementia in settings where live animals are not practical. Some of the documented benefits include reduced stress for the older adult and their caregivers, improved relaxation and motivation, and improved socialization. The animal-like robot operates using multiple kinds of sensors: tactile, light, audition, temperature and posture sensors. The instinct to nurture, to show affection, to give and receive love don't disappear, even as memories deteriorate with Alzheimer's or dementia. Robotic pets can help sustain these basic human needs and bring happiness to those experiencing such a cognitive decline. 4. Virtual travel and VR-assisted memory therapy For seniors with limited mobility or severe health problems, traveling to a famous landmark, or even across town to see their former home might seem like an unachievable dream. But smartphone-based VR programs are changing all that. Using VR programs and sites like Google Earth anyone can "go" places and see sights that they never thought they would experience. They can visit the Great Wall of China, the Empire State Building, or even the moon. They can also relive memories, through 3-D playbacks of home movies and VR-enhanced audio record-ings or participate in game-based memory therapy sessions. Technology is making positive aging ever simpler and caregiving less stressful.

In The Spotlight

Meghan Little

By Lisa Izzo

When Meghan Little started working at Heather Heights of Pittsford almost two

years ago, she became involved in G.R.A.P.E. Heather Heights administrator,

Sherry Hoose, is a huge proponent of G.R.A.P.E. and encouraged regular and

intentional involvement.

Because Meghan has a degree in graphic design and always wanted to work in

marketing, that is an area of expertise. As she became more involved in

G.R.A.P.E. functions and events, it seemed like a natural transition to explore

committee opportunities. “I love being able to utilize my skills in different facets.”

Meghan also serves as the co-chair on the Senior Housing Alliance, a

sub-committee of G.R.A.P.E.

G.R.A.P.E. has an amazing sense of community in an industry that is typically

very competitive. “I am originally from Buffalo, and the industry there was almost

cutthroat. Communities did not work together, and I had no relationship with our

top competitors.” Meghan loves the camaraderie and knowledge she gains from

having strong relationships with professionals in all different parts of the industry.

Meghan is also a wedding photographer outside of work. She shoots weddings on

the weekends from April-October and photographs on average 6 weddings a year.

She also loves attending concerts, and she is a huge local concert fan. “Rochester

has an amazing music scene, and I have some friends who play local shows.”

Traveling is a huge passion of hers as well, and she hopes to get to Ireland soon!

With her graphic design degree, Meghan always wanted to work in marketing. She

was very excited and proud to become a marketing director at the age of 25, three

years out of college. She also graduated college early with summa cum laude, in

the top 3% of her class with a 4.0 GPA.

Little known fact: Only 2% of the world’s population have green eyes, and

Meghan is a part of that statistic!

Meghan really loved the movie Hidden Figures, as it was based on true events and

showcased the struggle that women/African Americans went through during a time

period not so long ago. It highlighted the strength and knowledge women have and

how brilliant minds were sheltered due to race and gender.

Please let the G.R.A.P.E. office know of any changes to your address, phone

number or email address! Changing your info on the

Also, updating your member profile doesn’t update your provider profile.

Thank you!!

All of our committees welcome visitors

Did you know….

There are member AND provider profiles?? Your member profile is yours to login for events. The provider profile is for YOUR company. Or another way to look at it, is your company’s ElderPages listing. That is what people see when they look at the online directory!
