and, so, but and or are the ones we use

all the time.

For is old fashioned and formal.

It means because.

I love her, for she is wonderful.

Yet is also formal and old-fashioned. It

means even though.

S

He loved his family, yet he left them= He left his family even though he

loved them.

There are special rules about nor!

Use question word order after nor:

I didn’t call him, nor did I want to.

Nor combines two negatives.

Another way to say it:

I didn’t call him, nor did I want to.

=

I didn’t call him, and I didn’t want to, either.

Another way to say it:

We didn’t have a final exam, and we didn’t have to write a final paper, either. =

We didn’t have a final exam, nor did we have to write a final paper.

Another way to say it:

BART didn’t strike on Friday, and they didn’t go out today, either =

BART didn’t strike on Friday, nor did they go out today.

Another way to say it:

I don’t have time to go out tonight, and my husband doesn’t, either =

I don’t have time to go out tonight, nor does my husband.

Another way to say it:

The store won’t return my money, nor will they exchange the merchandise=

The store won’t return my money, and they won’t exchange the merchandise, either.
