Causes of Conflict

• 600 year conflict.• Major parties involved: Tutsi and

Hutu• 1993 a treaty was signed.• Conflict arose to Rwanda Hutu

president’s aircraft was shot down. In 1994

• 1994 the conflict started to become genocide

• Tutsi won control and forced the Hutu into hiding in near by Zaire and Tanzania.

Reasons for Australian Involvement

• Pressure from the UN.• To stop the conflict and

Genocide.• To help sustain future

development.

Roles performed by Australia

• Deployed 302 soldiers to Rwanda.

• Provided medical aid to UN force and Rwandan people.

• Due to UN and rules of engagement the Australian soldiers were not allowed to open fire.

Achievements

• They provided medical attention.

• However there were no achievements in peacekeeping and conflict resolution.

Evaluation• The operations in Rwanda were

a failure. • UN did not want countries to

participate in Rwanda, it was considered a lost cause.

• Troops were not permitted to take action against those who were committing genocide.

• UN had prior knowledge that the genocide would happen but did nothing about it.
