Comparatives Adjetives… Talking about two things, we can "compare" them. We

can see if they are the same or different.

We can use comparative adjectives to describe the differences.

We have three kinds of comparatives:

Superiority

Equality

Inferiority

SUPERIORITY

short adjectives: add "-er"

long adjectives: use "more"

SHORT ADJECTIVES Short words ( 1 syllable er )

old older slow slower

My grandfather is older than my father.

The turtle is slower than a dog.

SHORT ADJECTIVES If the adjective ends in e just add r

late later nice nicer

Today I arrive later than yesterday. My brother nicer than my girlfriend.

SHORT ADJECTIVES

If the adjective ends in y change it to i and add er.

happy happier easy easier

My sister is happier than me. Art is easier than math.

SHORT ADJECTIVES If the adjective ends in consonant,vowel,

consonant; double the last consonant and add er.

big bigger hot hotter

My house is bigger than an apartment. A cup of coffe is hotter than an ice cream

cone.

LONG ADJECTIVES Long words (2,3,4,… syllables) more beautiful

more beautiful

Biology History

Biology is more interesting than history.

With some 2 syllable adjectives, we can use 'er' or 'more':

quiet → quieter/more quiet

My dog is more quiet than your cat.

clever → cleverer/more clever

.Einsten was cleverer than my

teacher.

narrow → narrower/more narrow

.Saenz Peña avenue is more narrow than Argentina avenue.

simple → simpler/more simple

.

English is simpler than Spanish.

Exception

The following adjectives have irregular forms:

good → better

.

Callao school is better than Josè Olaya school.

bad → worse

.

Reymond Manco is worse than Pizarro.

• far → farther/further

.

From Perù , USA is further than Mexico.

Use of Comparative Adjectives: Often, the comparative adjective is followed by "than".

Put the adjectives between brackets in the correct form
