Communities 5.2

= groups of various species interacting in the same habitat

PREDATION!• = one organisms killing another for food.• predator-prey interactions• most animals are both predator and prey.• Other types of predation include:

– Parasitism: one organism (parasite) feeds on another (host); ex. tapeworm

– Herbivory: one organism (herbivore) feeds on plants.

– How do these 2 types of predation differ from predator-prey interactions?

Coevolution = a “back and forth” evolutionary adjustment between two species that interact.

• Evolutionary changes in one species can result in changes in another species.

• Ex. Hosts & Parasites

• Ex. Some plants & Herbivores

• HW…

Symbiotic Interactions: a relationship in which 2 species live in close association with each other.

• Mutualism: +/+– Ex. sea anemone and clown fish– Others?

• Commensalism: +/0– Ex. orchids and trees in rainforest– “iffy”

• Parasitism: +/-

Predator-Prey Lab

HW…due tomorrow

• Explain how each of the 2 examples listed in your notes under “coevolution” are examples of organisms coevolving. Your explanation should include details about each organism involved in the interaction.

• -Hosts & Parasites• -Some plants & Herbivores

• Quick labs on pgs. 105 (use graph paper), 110, 113 (you will have to read about niches before complete the lab on pg. 113). All questions need to be answered using complete sentences for credit on the assignment. You may complete the entire assignment on graph paper.
