Native son of this State, servant of her people, yours has been a respected voice speaking for moderation and unity. As Assemblyman, as State administrator, as United States Senator, for more than three decades you gave to the people of California your wise guidance and humane leadership in the affairs of State and Nation, and you continue to give unsparingly of your energies and talents on behalf of your fellow men. For the worth and the distinction of your achievements, we proudly welcome you to honorary membership in our company.
KENNETH BANCROFT CLARK
Scholar, scientist, wise and courageous counselor, with wisdom, knowledge, and compassion you have helped us find a fresh dedication to our ideals. Psychologist, author, adviser to Presidents, colleague, and friend, your firmness in the defense of justice and your commitment to the values of scholarship and humanity have been powerful reminders of our heritage. Grateful for your work and enriched by your contribution to our lives, we salute you with respect and affection, and welcome you to honorary membership in our society.
H. NORTHROP FRYE
Imaginative and influential man of letters, your works in literary interpretation and theory serve as models for students of literature; perceptive critic, you have examined society from a Canadian's perspective and have helped to mold the letters of your nation; wise counselor and distinguished professor, you have helped to reforge the links between creation and knowledge, art and science, myth and concept, and you have brought common sense, wit, dignity, and breadth of vision to the discipline of humane letters. We proudly salute you today, and confer upon you our highest honor.
CHARLES SPARKS THOMAS
Distinguished alumnus of the University of California, your life is a model of accomplishment and service; wise administrator and captain of enterprise, your counsel has been sought by your peers and your nation; servant of the people, adviser to the President, you have given of yourself in fullest measure to your community and your fellow men. For your many achievements, we salute you today and bestow upon you our highest honor.
THE FRONT COVER
As the inspiration for this beautiful and deeply moving lithograph, Ben Shahn has chosen a passage from THE NOTEBOOKS OF MALTE LAURIDS BRIGGE. In this autobiographical novel, Rainer Maria Rilke tells of his loneliness of mind and sense of defeat during his early years in Paris. But more important, he tells of his own discoveries that led to his development as an artist. The critic J. B. Leishman has written of Rilke's works, "nothing like these poems has been written before; nothing like them has been written since."
Shahn first read Rilke's novel when he too was a young man in Paris and was also filled with self-doubt. He discovered that Rilke "was sharing with me the doubts and the hesitations of art, the probings, the slow emergence of forms. His every line of writing was art, and yet, such art was inseparable from its life content."
The passage that Shahn has selected applies with equal power to both poet and artist. "For the sake of a single verse, one must see many cities, men and things, one must know the animals, one must feel how the birds fly and know the gestures with which the little flowers open in the morning .... " These and many other experiences must be combined to make a single poem - or a work of art such as Ben Shahn has created here.
